Music at the Biltmore

For those who would like to listen to the music which was played at the Biltmore Hotel by the Early Thirties, I've found out for the first time an orchestra with the mention « Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel Orchestra ». The picture on the video will make you think of Otis Criblecoblis' avatar... Good program !

Thanks for the link AlvaroLegido.

I just came across this slide of the Vine Street Hollywood Palace in 1965.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1965...item4ae7b9b8f2

That's a nice Ranchero.

I know we've seen the Palace numerous times on NLA, but I thought I'd go ahead and post this GSV dated Feb. 2014.

below: It appears to have had a recent paint job. ( hides the elaborate detailing)

After coming across the above photograph by accident, I googled and found a better photograph and some further information.

I found this 'noirish' looking photograph a few days ago on eBay.

"los Angeles California Route 66 Mark C. Bloome Gas Station at night 8x9"

15 min. Car Wash. -back when you could take the time for a 15 min car wash

Loyalton posted a smaller, yet better quality, photograph of this same Mark C. Bloome Gas Station (I believe there were several in L.A.)

There's at least two old (very modest) hotels being rehabbed into new hotels at Selma and Wilcox. That area is anchored by the beautiful Hollywood Citizen News building (1930)and Claud Beelman's US Post Office (1937) for the WPA.

Hollywood Citizen News (now offices):

LAT

The Post Office (Gilbert Hotel and Mama Shelter, left & right to the south):

gsv

First, the 1926 hotel on the sw corner of Selma and Wilcox (next door to Citizen News), is being rehabbed into the first Mama Shelter US location, designed by Philip Starck:

hotelchatter

The Gilbert Hotel (1925), across from the Citizen News building, looks almost ready to open. Those signs need work though:

gsv

UPDATE, Feb 2017:
Mama Shelter is open. The Gilbert is stuck:

gsv

The Mark Twain Hotel, across from the Post Office, seems to forever be on the verge of a major rehab, but nothing yet:
(Update. The Twain is finally getting rehabbed: http://la.curbed.com/2016/4/15/11439...tique-makeover)

gsv
Also check out 3940dxer's post for the Mark Twain Hotel's tenuous connection to the Clemen's family.

UPDATE, Feb 2017, The Mark Twain is coming along, but the neon is still in a state:

gsv

Half a block east from Wilcox and Selma, a new Dream Hotel is being built behind the neo-Georgian Marion Building (former home of the Spotlight bar).
It's reported it will have a rooftop jungle, maybe with monkeys.
(That's Mama Shelter in the distance on the left with the shorter Gilbert just this side of it):

gsv

UPDATE, Feb 2017 on the Dream Hotel, built, but not open yet:

Thx CBD for clearing up the monument mystery.

Great (stair-free) Broadway Tunnel shot JScott, especially fun after seeing the close-up of the grand staircase that MichaelRyerson just posted. The grade, which later had to be lowered, is clear too:

Marveling at all of the recent panorama posts, which reminds me of one I tried stitching together (unsuccessfully) in a large format. It is labeled as Downtown LA - 1930. Apologies if this subject has already been addressed. DWP's version http://waterandpower.org/3%20Histori...ramic_1930.jpg appears to be cropped from a larger version at USC. http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/si...d/71421/rec/16

Western Air Express flew two such aircraft between LA and SF. Another local carrier, Trans Western Airlines "TWA" also flew the plane.

"Bob's" is the only photo I have seen with triple blades in the front. In the other examples, they all seemed to sport twin blade propellers - forward and aft. If the same engines were used, it would seem counterintuitive but not impossible for a flying aircraft to have different propeller shapes and forms on different engines.

May 1931, TWA flight lifts off from Burbank's United Airport.

Your post caused me to consider shopping the neighborhood for Badger Tires at 1553 North Cahuenga. Looks like I am about eighty years too late. The same address now appears to house art galleries.

10275 W. Pico Blvd., 1936 and 2015

This building is on the NE corner of Pico Blvd. and Fox Hills Drive. The 20th Century-Fox Studio, formerly the Fox Film Corporation Studio, is in the background to the right.

USCDL -- http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/re...ll170/id/84868

Let's get a closer look at that bench. Fox Film Corporation merged with 20th Century Pictures in 1935 to form 20th Century-Fox, so perhaps that's why this old Fox bench is out on the sidewalk. I think the text under Fox Film Corporation is Fox Movietone Studio:

Now we're looking at the west side of the building:

USCDL -- http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/co...d/84874/rec/13

In these next two January 2015 views, 10275 looks vacant. Next door, 10271 used to be the Los Angeles Rams' offices. It certainly looked vacant the last time I checked, although web searching indicates it's still owned by the Rams. Just a few years ago, it still had old Rams stuff scattered around the first floor:

Brilliant Court House photo

By far the clearest/sharpest photograph of the early Court House that I have ever seen. I imagine it was taken the same day in 1899 as the Detroit Photographic Co. panorama photos, posted previously by MichaelRyerson.

The detail is so fine, you can even see the '1888' on the cornerstone!

Hop over to the source page and play with the magnify function! You'll be amazed at just how intricate the stonework was in this great old edifice...
