It really was a success. I didn't want to be interviewed, but let me clarify, Signal / Jeddy didn't JUST get interviewed by CBC. They were hit by VOCM, CBC, The Telegram AND NTV. All three of us stood up and spoke in favor, as Signal said, which sort of turned the tide from an anti-development meeting to a pro-development meeting. Without us there would have been 2 For and 4 against. Instead they got 5 for and 4 against. Now imagine if 5 of us had gone. 7 of us. All of us.

It will be interesting to see what headlines are tomorrow. Based on how fast the guys got pulled aside for interviews, I'm willing to bet it won't be the regular "residents against new development" headline.

In closing, I want to say that the Beta run of the Steel-Toe Boot Brigade was an overwhelming success, and I really hope more make it out to the next proposal. There is no doubt in my mind we can make a world of difference.

I would have loved to have been there just to see the look on certain faces when the 3 of ye stood up for this proposal.

I bet "Walter Harding" nearly had a heart attack.

This would've been tomorrow's story without us. Because this guy LITERALLY was there:

I just hope we can get more of us out for the next one. A combined effort really could help to change the tide in the city. For anyone who might be a little unsure, we'll be having another forum meet and greet soon. Come have a beer with us and we can all hash it out!

It'd be nice if they air the whole thing - they started filming him pretty quickly as soon as he went up. But he nailed every point in the right order.

Even brought up what European cities like Paris, Oslo, etc. have done. It was just great!

Aside from what Jeddy and Signal and Copes have said.....this comment really sums up the whole "heritage issue" for the west end of DT:

Quote:
"Mr. A White says if you are concerned with heritage, you should have spoken up before the Delta"

Very true. The heritage value of that neighborhood of downtown is close to zero. Even pre-Delta there was nothing there that would be worth preserving. Eventually that neighborhood would have had to be bulldozed anyway, it would be an absolute embarrassment for any first-world city to have within its limits.

Our first one...

http://www.vocm.com/newsarticle.asp?...30929&latest=1

...There was a mixed bag of reaction - some for and some against. Proponents are confident that the structure would blend in with other big buildings in the area like the Delta Hotel and the Fortis building.

One resident said that the city was "chipping away at heritage regulations that are put in place to limit high buildings" while another said it is a "hodge-podge approach to zoning." But not everyone saw it that way, with several people strongly for development in the west end of downtown rather than the east end...

Awesome start.

Here's Signal!

Lukewarm response for high-rise hotel proposal

Quote:
A proposed hotel for downtown St. John's met with both applause and skepticism at a public hearing on Tuesday night, as details were presented on the proposed 12-storey Hilton Garden Inn.

Ryan Crocker: 'If we want to preserve all of our heritage that exists east of Waldegrave Street, then we need to let development happen somewhere.'
About 30 people attended a hearing at St. John's City Hall on the hotel, which has not yet been fully evaluated by city staff nor put to council for a vote.

The Hilton is planned for the corner of New Gower Street and Springdale Street, and would be built west of the existing Delta Hotel and conference centre. The lot is currently vacant.

The 10 residents who spoke had a variety of opinions, from a poor reaction to the height to support for developing a barren patch of land.

Resident Ryan Crocker said he'd like to see the plan go ahead, in part to shift development away from the nearby heritage zone in the downtown, where height restrictions are much more severe.

"I think we need to expand our downtown. St. John's is a growing city," Crocker said.

"If we want to preserve all of our heritage that exists east of Waldegrave Street, then we need to let development happen somewhere. So west of Waldegrave is the proper place for it. There are a lot of decrepit lots," he said.

Architect Ron Fougere was pleased with what he heard from the public forum.

"Every time we have a public hearing, we're looking for views and how people feel about the design and how they feel about the ideas we have," he said.

"We thought we got some pretty good support tonight, it's nice to see," said Fougere.
