My God, what I'd give for a chance to sit down up there and play that organ!

I'd probably pass on Notre-Dame for an hour of goofing around in the maison symphonique

^ Oh man, stunning. That altarpiece at Sacré-Coeur-de-Jésus is something else.

I thought so too... I couldn't believe the picture so I had to go there and see it with my own eyes...

^ At the polar opposite end of the spectrum, here is a rendering for the to-be-built Whyte Ridge Baptist Church in the southwestern suburbs of Winnipeg. I honestly don't know what to even say about this.

It fits well into a suburban setting which is probably how it was intended to be.

Those old churches are spectacular, we will be hard pressed to see many built like that anymore.

It's certainly a flexible-looking building, I'll give them that... if they ever move again I'm sure they could find a telecom equipment company in need of a warehouse that would be willing to take the space off their hands.

Honestly, it looks more like a 70s textile plant in a 3rd-tier quebec city than a church...

I wonder whether the Sanctuary of that Baptist church (to the right of the entrance doors, I assume) is meant to be permanent, or possibly intended to be "built out" in future, as is sometimes the case with suburban Protestant churches? For the rest, it looks like the community centre that, basically, it is.

It would be misleading, I think, to compare it to even a modern QC RC church - the Baptists don't have that counter-Reformation shock and awe tradition weighing them down.

Not too far from Whyte Ridge Baptist there will also be another new place of worship going up in a slightly more conventional-looking style. This is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Mormon Temple planned for the Bridgwater area in SW Winnipeg.

It should be noted that Calgary's Mormon Temple is pretty impressive as far as Canadian ones go:

The Calgary temple is pretty striking, and the location they chose for it only adds to that. It is very visible and prominent.

That Mormon Temple is awesome. I never knew it existed. I also didn't know that Mormans had enough number sin Canada to build churches like that. I just checked and Alberta has the largest number of them and they represent 1.9% of the population with 80,000 plus members. That's more then double the percentage of the next closest province by percentage. BC at 0.64%.

I guess I won't ask whether Mormon temples belong in a thread about churches.

But it does: A temple (from the Latin word templum) is a structure reserved for religious or spiritual rituals and activities such as prayer and sacrifice. It is typically used for such buildings belonging to all faiths where a more specific term such as church, mosque or synagogue is not generally used in English. These include Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism among religions with many modern followers, as well as other ancient religions such as Ancient Egyptian religion.
