I can answer that! I'm full of Rhode Island trivia.
The answer, believe it or not, is that the state
is not called "Rhode Island." It's called "Rhode Island and Providence Plantations." Rhode Island is an alternate name for Aquidneck Island, which
is an actual island and is home to three towns, most famously beautiful and historic Newport. The rest of the state is Providence Plantations. But "Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" is just too much of a mouthful, so everyone just calls it Rhode Island for short.
