We happened to find a cancellation spot at Golden Ears Provincial Park camping ground in Maple Ridge, so out Saturday night was spent out in the woods. It was a busy summer weekend and every single spot had been taken, so this was a really lucky find.

We were happy to find that our spot that to the side from the crowded areas, next to quiet forest.

We didn't do much over the weekend, other than swimming in the beautiful Alouette Lake which was nice and warm.

Did a day trip down to Red Rock Coulee Natural Area in southeast Alberta on Sunday - about a 7 hour round trip from Calgary. Hot and sunny, the breeze was hot and at the site temperatures were in the 35C range. Didn't encounter any rattlesnakes, short horned lizards or scorpions this time. To give one an idea of the size of these rocks, my son in the one picture stands 6'2" tall.

Pics...

So, I just got a new camera before I came back to BC for the summer. I traveled to many places in the southern half of the province (and briefly dipped into Alberta).

Here are the first pics I took with my new camera (taken on the last couple days of July).

This was a really hot day, reaching up to 38 in the afternoon as I drove through the Boundary District.

First stop, Bromley Rock Provincial Park. This is a favorite highway road stop / swimming point known by locals between Princeton and Keremeos .

Then stopping at a small fruit stand outside of Keremeos itself. I love the surrounding hills.

One cannot just drive though Osoyoos, one must stop for a quick swim

Goodbye Osoyoos, heading further east.

Highway 3 through the Boundary area east of Rock Creek.

And finally, coming into the Grand Forks area.

Pics are all my own.

Very nice. Looks like a sun worshipper's paradise. I can feel the dry heat just looking at those pics.

Thanks! Yeah, from May to September there is no shortage of sunshine and heat.

After the Okanagan / Boundary region I made my way to the Rocky Mountains

First we drove along the 22 in Alberta through the foothills, lovely area.

Then to Banff National Park (did some good scrambling, was a lot of fun).

Very nice!

I drove through Jasper for my first time, but it was completely smoked out. We could barely see anything.

I got super lucky with the smoke. The day before was quite smokey in Canmore, but a few showers rolled through during the night and cleared everything up for my drive through Banff and Yoho Parks. In fact during my entire stay in BC (July 28 to Aug 23) I only experienced 3 days where the smoke was a nuisance.

Yah it was pretty bad on Friday as well. But its easy for me to get there, its only a 3 hour drive when I need me some mountains. Its still worth finding to time to get back. If you can try for Dark Nights in Oct.

Highway 22 from Calgary south to highway 3 is one of my favourite drives, just gorgeous! The pics of Red Rock Coulee are pretty cool too, looks like a desert after this summer! That's supposed to be the driest area in the country, about the same as Ashcroft (Osoyoos gets too much rain in winter).

I've driven the full length of 22 and have to say the south is Grand, but the whole length is quite an enjoyable drive. You get a good cross section of Alberta.
