DSME Trenton hiring as it prepares for new project

Scott Covey, communications manager for DSME Trenton, said about 70 employees have been busy this winter building six large pressure vessels for the oil and gas industry in Atlantic Canada while preparing the plant for construction of 34 new towers for South Canoe Wind Project. Production on his project is expected to begin in early March.

He said during the past six weeks, DSME Trenton has recalled and hired a number of new employees and is working to have everyone safely trained and orientated before the arrival of steel in the coming weeks.

Although this project has yet to begin, the manpower needed to prepare the facility has grown and is currently at 95, with more skilled employees returning to work weekly, Covey said. At full production in mid-May, DSME Trenton plans to have in the vicinity of 200 employed at its facility.

Clairtone building to house medicinal marijuana production plant

Vida Cannabis identified the facility as the perfect structure to house a large-scale medical marijuana production plant. Vida further determined the plant's location in Stellarton is ideal, with the modern infrastructure in place to run such a facility efficiently.

The deal is scheduled to close on or before Apr. 15 for a total purchase price of $500,000. At full production, a labour force of 200-300 may be needed.

Under the terms of the Agreement, Vida Canada will be granted by the Town of Stellarton a 50-year irrevocable license to produce medical marijuana at the facility, subject to Vida Canada obtaining a commercial license from Health Canada. Such local approval is a condition necessary to making a successful application to Health Canada.

Stellarton Mayor Joe Gennoe welcomed Vida Cannabis.

Also, the New Glasgow Walmart is "expanding" but, not really. The store is being reconfigured within its current walls. The reconfiguration will include the addition of produce, and meat departments.

Friday's two very positive developments, DSME and the old Claritone have been overshadowed by today's devastating announcement that Michelin is cutting half its Pictou County workforce. 500 people are losing their jobs. What a difference a weekend makes.

Absolutely crushing blow to the local economy.

Yup, it is really sad to see those 500 jobs going. We really can't catch a break here...

Unhappy

Yes its sad that Springhill will losing its towns status but in the long run I think it will benefit everyone. Being 6 million in debt its time. But like in all the adversity the town has faced over the years, the community will pull together and be stronger in the end. I am a proud Springhiller even if I don't live there anymore.

Stellarton pot project exceeds financing hopes

An Ontario-based company that recently bought an old Stellarton factory building, with the goal of turning it into a commercial medical marijuana production facility, says it is seeing more interest from investors than anticipated.

Vida Cannabis Corp. announced Wednesday that it has completed an oversubscribed equity financing, raising US$2.5 million by a private placement offering of its common stock. The round had been initially set at US$1.5 million.

Vida Cannabis recently bought a vacant 315,000-square-foot concrete-and-steel building from the Town of Stellarton for $500,000 to house its medical marijuana growing operation. The municipality has given its approvals for the plant to operate.

The structure was built by the Clairtone Sound Corporation Ltd. in 1966 and has a concrete floor, concrete walls and a steel roof.

Heritage Gas plans to extend pipeline

Michel Sarrouy, vice president of engineering and construction for Heritage Gas, said the pipeline will be extended through Pictou County in New Glasgow and Stellarton.

“We’re continuing to work on the plans.”

Heritage gas is still working with the towns on a Municipal Operating Access Agreement, which is hoped to be approved by June so construction can start.

“We would like to construct in June 2014, and have gas flowing, at this point, we’re saying October would be our target date.”

Been awhile since I've posted. Been far too busy, and that likely isn't changing for awhile.

Anyway, for those of you who don't know, the Maritime Building in New Glasgow is finally coming down. Farewell to the tallest building in NG.

That's a shame, I always liked that building. Did there used to be a knife factory in it?

Why is it coming down?

Not sure about the knife factory part, but the building is coming down after water damaged most of it a few years ago. If I recall correctly The cause of the water damage was from the sprinkler system going off.

Anyway, it was found that it would cost too much to fix the building as apposed to bringing it down.

The crazy part is that it will cost $1 million to demolish it safely, and the town is so broke it has to borrow the money to do so.

As of yesterday it was down to three stories. I did notice that a building nearby was being converted into lofts though (always nice for new residential projects in smaller towns).
