The blue detail on the side-street fascade of this building is about as adventurous as we've gotten with heritage structures:

The new rising above the old.

I dare say the price is reduced, attached to a property that has probably never been renovated. It's sad - although the houses are protected and the vast majority of renovations return them to a more authentic heritage state, sometimes the beautiful details get lost - as you can see in the difference between these two, previous-identical homes.

As far as I'm aware, the only hospital remaining the downtown core.

Some residents choose to get rid of what little front garden they have in favour of off-street parking spaces. Personally, I hate it. Hopefully the city will ban the practice eventually.

Our second day of heavy fog. It has lifted occasionally but never broken. It started to break up this evening so I raced down to the harbour to take a few photos. But it was a false alarm... I just captured it rolling back in again, ha!

Thanks for these very nice updates, SignalHillHiker!

It makes me excitement to see pictures taken today from the other side of the Atlantic. That´s your merit, and I appreciate it a lot

As usual, beautiful city and marine landscapes.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain!

The sun is splittin' the rocks, b'ys. It's cool - only 2C - but you feel wonderful in the sun. Lots of people out and about in shorts and t-shirts.

And there's a blanket of low fog strung along the coast. It's gorgeous.

The view from Signal Hill toward the Memorial University of Newfoundland. It's the largest university in Atlantic Canada - and probably the ugliest . But we love it.

And the view of downtown from Signal Hill.

A lot of people don't connect the dots and realize that the well-known Newfoundland dog and the world-famous Labrador (Lab for short) dogs are both from here, Newfoundland and Labrador. There are statues of them in various communities around the province.

The National War Memorial between Duckworth and Water streets is a favourite hang-out on warm, sunny days.

Thanks for these updates! Lovely shots, as usual.

I see much people enjoying the spring weather in St.John´s. You really had a very pleasant sunday there. I see you reached about 18ºC, a very comfortable temperature to enjoy outside.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain!

Thank you, Danny.

Yes, it was amazing. Our finest day this year so far, by FAR. It got up to 22C downtown - but 18C is our official, airport temperature, yes.

So we still haven't had a 20C day officially! I can't wait for the first one.

Today there was one very visible sign of spring. The grass in the Battery neighbourhood started to turn green. Soon all the dead grass on these hills will be lush and green, a beautiful contrast with the red-tinted red.

If you zoom in on the full-sized version of this first picture, you can make out the cannons on the hilltop to the left, and see individual hikers on the trail on the lower hill to the right.

The sunset today was beautiful as well:

Gorgeous, but enough to blow the arse off ya.

Church people = median parkers. Tsk tsk tsk...

A windy day on Signal Hill, a drive down Water Street (our main downtown drag on a lazy Sunday), and a trip up Barter's Hill.

St. John's from Fort Waldegrave.

This fort was erected in 1798 on the ruins of the legendary Old North Castle. The fort consisted of a battery (cannons), barracks, and - most unusually - a large metal chain. This chain was strung nightly across the Narrows (the entrance of St. John's Harbour) from Fort Waldegrave on the north side to Fort Amherst on the south side - a distance of 174 metres.

The chain was strong enough to shred any ships that tried to storm the harbour at night.

These two locations played a pivotal role in the Battle of Signal Hill, which - although virtually unknown to Canadians - was the final and one of the most important battles in the British defeat of the French in North America. After the British retook St. John's from the French, they surrendered and relinquished control of all eastern North America.

One in a larger size.

I am so happy, I could cry. Today, FINALLY, the trees burst to life. We have LEAVES!

To set the mood...

The new suburban Fairfield hotel, which JUST opened:

A cluster of construction/renovation that will result in a new parkade and three new condo buildings.

Pink flowers in a little half-roundabout on Church Hill.

A small park on the median between Gower Street and Queen's Road, dedicated to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC), our police force.

Green leaves overlooking Duckworth Street.

I went down to Quidi Vidi Lake, the main lake in St. John's (which is blocked with them). This lake hosts the Royal St. John's Regatta, the oldest continuing sporting event in North America. Rowers are already practicing.

The former American military base, Fort Pepperell, which is being converted into St. John's newest residential subdivision.

Quidi Vidi Lake is one of the most popular recreation areas in the city for the elderly because it is one of the very, very few relatively flat trails.

It's been EXTREMELY foggy for several days now so I haven't bothered to take many pictures.

Today, however, jeddy1989 and I went for a walk downtown and took the ghetto way home.

An old woman was throwing bread into the street for a flock of pigeons and seagulls. Hilarious.

I wish the city still allowed clotheslines to be strung between the houses. St. John's does comedic trashy/lively ghetto better than any city outside Manchester.

West End. Cabot Street is the focus of this photo, and the cross street I'm standing on is, I believe, Boncloddy Street.
