Ottawa Ranked Number 1
Josh Pringle
Monday, April 28, 2008

Ottawa-Gatineau has been ranked the best place to live in Canada.

A survey released by MoneySense magazine placed the National Capital region ahead of Victoria and Fredericton in the survey of 154 communities across Canada.

The magazine looked at everything from crime rates, household income, weather, doctors and housing.

The survey shows Ottawa failed to make into the top 10 for any category, but was above average in everything.

Toronto ranked 51st.
(from www.cfra.com)

That pretty much sums up how I feel about Ottawa. We're not the best at one specific thing when you compare it to all the cities accross Canada, but it's one heck of a nice place to live. We don't have the ocean, but we have Mooney's, we don't have the foothills, but we have the Gatineaus, we don't have Montreal's nightlife, but we have the market. Not to mention all that other crap about income, doctors, crime.....

I agree, Ottawa has a solid base of well paying, secure government jobs, High Tech jobs. Low crime rates compared to any city this size. Lots of recreational areas.

I've seen an article somewhere that Ottawa was one of the top 20 best city's to live in the world.

You're probably referring to the City Mayors Quality of Life Survey where Ottawa ranked 18th in 2007 (up 3 spots from 2006). I wonder when this year's results will be released. Just staying in the top 20 is a real tribute to how great a city is when you look at how minute the differences are between #1 and #20.

You'd like it; it's like Thunder Bay but without the grain elevators. At least that's what I remember from growing up there. Our favourite thing was the #95 bus that took us elsewhere. To be fair, it's improved since then. Housing is relatively affordable -- 230K for a 3-bedroom townhouse (c.1800 s.f.)

Here are a couple more number ones from this fine city:

Number one producer of lumber products worldwide in the 1860s. And outsiders say we're nothing without our government jobs??

First city in the world to go electric at the turn of the last century, using hydro from the river.

11 time Stanley Cup winners since 1883, best regular season in the league in 03 and still number 1 in the east in 2007.

More Phd dropouts per capita than any other city in Canada. Meaning we are smart enough to get into professorial programs and smart enough to get out early.

Yeah Ottawa!

Oh yeah one more: one day last week we were the warmest city in the country, according to the CBC. In April. That's rare.
