Sign unveiling ‘an important symbol’, says St. Catharines MPP

GO Transit’s march eastward along the QEW corridor took another small step Monday, as local politicians and representatives from Metrolinx unveiled a sign recognizing the site of the future Grimsby GO station.

Details on the station remain fairly scant, but St. Catharines MPP Jim Bradley called it “an important symbol of what is happening in Niagara.”

“It’s an indication we’re making progress,” he added.

The town of Grimsby, in conjunction with the region, recently passed a GO secondary plan for the area around the Casablanca-QEW interchange. Officials with Metrolinx said it’s still early in the design phase for the Grimsby station, which will be located at the corner of Casablanca Boulevard and the South Service Road.

Metrolinx is working with CN, owners of the existing rail, to ensure necessary upgrades are made to the line, officials said, and infrastructure needs are still being assessed.

The timeline for the Niagara, which will also include stops in St. Catharines and Niagara Falls for the first phase, remains the same. A station at Confederation Park in Stoney Creek is expected to be completed in 2019, with Grimsby’s station slated for 2021. VIA stations in Niagara Falls and St. Catharines would then be retrofitted and included in the line by 2023.

Local politicians are pushing to have that timeline moved up, though.

“Let’s get it to Niagara Falls as quickly as possible,” said chair Alan Caslin.

Grimsby Mayor Bob Bentley said the Grimsby station is part of an overall plan to address transit throughout West Niagara. Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln have all been working in various degrees to creating local public transit connections to get people to and from the coming GO station.
