I've not heard of that town, but it's up your way so I know you're right.

The few times I've heard it come up in speech, though, it was definitely kay. Not even close to key.

I likely would not have known Quay was pronounced "key" if I had not gone to other Commonwealth countries. I'd been to Toronto many times before travelling internationally, but had never come across Queen's Quay.

Mattagami
Strachan
Theriault
Rochdale
Moneta
Wende
Belanger
Tyyne
Kamiskotia
I would say Rochdale "rotch-dayle".

Not surprising because of the reorganizational name changes, but you've actually been there (from your photos), its part of New Wes Valley.

I guess the usage is unique in NL place names. Its a shame that, in the same way, people soon may not know where Chamberlains or Kelligrews are either.

Oh, yes. I LOVE New-Wes-Valley. I only know Newtown, Wesleyville, and Valleyview within that. But I've been around that entire loop and back down to Gander, so yeah, I've been there.

Yeah it's true. I still know them all - Topsail to Holyrood - but I bet preteens in CBS have no idea.

The actual name of the municipality is "New-Wes-Valley"?

Amalgamated, yeah. There are a lot of those around the island. At least they shortened the names. Most others didn't, like the Town of Centreville-Wareham-Trinity.

You forgot "Rea" which is pronounced as "Ray" or "Rae" instead of how it is spelled "Ree-ah".

Kamiskotia (regardless of how people are pronouncing it) probably comes from Cree, so it would be pronounced "KAH-mis-koe-tee-yah".

The river that runs south of Thunder Bay is the Kaministiquia, which people pronounce "KAH-min-iss-tih-kwa" but the correct pronunciation is "GAA-mih-niz-teg-way-yuh".

For Torontonians, if you say "spuh-DYE-nuh", you're wrong. It's "spa-DEE-nuh". From Ojibwe "ihs-pah-DEE-nah", "large hill". The tallest point in Ontario is Ishpatina Ridge near Sudbury. Pasadina comes from basatina, means "between the hills" or "valley" in Ojibwe. There is a town in California with that name because it sounds pretty.

Thunder Bay's Squier Street is almost always misspelled as Squire. It's actually pronounced "Squeer".
