I think it’s just an unfounded rumour. The company that is looking to build a 400 room hotel / casino / entertainment venue is looking at either the former location of popsicle factory or waterfront. Who knows that could be a rumour too but my source seems pretty reliable and was correct on past projects.

Hmm never say never but the former Popsicle site across from Harbour Station is not a large enough plot to build a 400 room hotel / casino / entertainment venue on unless they make it 20+ stories high 😇 😱. IMO waterfront is the ideal opportunity for such a development. Time will tell.

The fact that the same rumour is coming from multiple sources is interesting, but the one big red flag to me is that the NBM space ought to be big enough to accommodate a casino, but just a casino. It certainly lacks the space for a hotel.

If there is any truth to the rumour, could it perhaps be a different developer than the one wanting to build the 400-room hotel? Maybe one that specializes in the casino business and wants to leverage the existing Hilton and Delta rather than operate their own hotel?

The thing is too, if there's a Casino going into the area, it needs to wait for the museum to go ahead, which isn't supposed to be completed for a 3-5 years. On top of that, we know the museum isn't a guarantee, even if Gallant wins the election.

So we would likely have to wait until at least after the election before any plans/ideas are announced.

Why does it need to wait for the museum ? The city’s new approach is carving up coast guard site in pieces for development as opposed to just one developer. If the developer is serious, they’ll have their own time line

Well, if we're talking a casino intended specifically to go into the NBM location in Market Square, then obviously it needs to wait for the museum so that the space will actually be vacant.

In any other location, though, there is no particular reason why a casino would have to coordinate with the museum.

s/w cashier at Winners - she says when Home Sense moves, it will be blocked off from Winners. Old space will be renovated - then Winners will move over to renovated space, then Michael’s will renovate old Winners space and move in Feb 2019 vacating their current location

What would go into the soon-to-be former Michael's when IT closes?

I'd like to see some kind of indoor amusement place go somewhere in that retail area....with Cineplex just a stones throw from the current Michael's, it'd be worth exploring.

=)

Well... there is the trampoline park that just opened up. Which sounds exactly what you would be asking for

I was thinking of something more along the lines of a Dave and Busters with a 10-pin bowling centre embedded in it.

Kind of like what they have in Niagara Falls, Ontario, with the Strike Rock N' Bowl on Clifton Hill in that city.

Christmas Discounters Now Open For The Season

Christmas Discounters' Seasonal Location At 90 Consumers Lane, Unit 10
Is Now Open For The Season!!!
Go & Check Them Out.

I Guess They Decided Not To Open The Second Location On The West Side So There Is Only The One Location Here In Saint John This Year.

I Still Hope One Day They Will Open A Permanent Location Here. But That Will Depend On How Much Business They Get Here & How Much People Want A Year-Round Location.

Last Year, When They Tested Out Being Open Year-Round It Didn't Go All That Well. When I Went In Throughout The Year There Was Like No Other Customers In The Store. I Hope One Day They Will Reconsider Being Year-Round Here In Saint John. I Think If The Store Looked Like The Permanent Location In Moncton (Discounters) They Will Be More Successful Year-Round Here.

Anyway, I Hope You Go & Check Them Out!

Their Website: https://christmasdiscounters.ca/
Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/ChristmasDiscounters/

I just took on a bit of an odd task, where I, with the help of Google Maps, decided to do a parking spot count for the entire McAllister Regional Retail Centre.

This would be everything from, going south to north, Hampton Inns to Exhibition Plaza(which, to me, is everything from First Choice Hair Cutters to Cineplex Cinemas), and, going west to east, Michael's Arts & Crafts to GoodLife Fitness at the back of McAllister Place.

I didn't count auto dealerships, because they park new cars on their grounds, which makes an accurate count there unreliable. I also threw out the lot for the former Co-Op store behind the Saint John Hyundai location, as well as Kenworth Trucking and CAA, because those aren't retail.

Here is the list, going from largest to smallest lots.('Expectant' = parking for soon-to-be moms)

1. East Point Shopping-2,616(98 disability/expectant spots)

2. McAllister Place-2,473(85 disability/expectant spots)

3. SmartCentres-1,418(41 disability spots)

4. Exhibition Plaza(for my purposes, everything from First Choice Hair Cutters to Cineplex Cinemas)-860(34 disability spots)

5. Kent Plaza(Kent's, Canadian Tire, and East Side Mario's)-848(21 disability spots)

6. Parkway Mall-691(19 disability spots)

7. Major's Brook Drive Plaza-326(10 disability spots)

8. Westmorland Place-176(10 disability spots)

9. Hubert St. Plaza-166(5 disability spots)

10. Shoppers Drug Mart-126(5 disability spots)

The final number of parking spots in that part of Saint John totals 9,700, with 328 of those spots for disability & expectants.

It'd mean that, if all cars were full(min. 4 persons/automobile), that part of Saint John could have about 38,800 total shoppers in that part of the city, which is about 25% of the overall Greater Saint John population(include Saint John Transit passengers, and that could go up to about 41,000).

This would, obviously, be for a peak Christmas Saturday retail day near the end of the year.

Does it also beg the question that there might be too many spots there?

Anywho, I just figured I'd pass this calculation along.

=)

Hart Department Store

I saw this article on the Moncton retail thread.

http://huddle.today/hart-department-...n-fredericton/

Hart is opening in Fredericton On October 29th & in the article there is this paragraph stating that they are exploring the idea of setting up stores in Saint John and Moncton.

Quote:
"Gauvin says the new Fredericton store is part of a larger expansion for Hart, which includes new locations in Quebec and Ontario. The company is also exploring the idea of setting up stores in Saint John and Moncton."
What are your thoughts on this?

SmartCentres (Saint John) Updated Site Plan (2018)

SmartCentres Updated Their Site Plan
  • Shows Winners Moved Over To The Former HomeSense Side Of The Building
And Now Shows The Building Split Into Two Units
    (#16 = Avaliable & #17 = Winners)
  • Shows Sherwin Williams Paint Store In Unit #3
  • Units #2, #10, #12 & #16 Are Vacant.
However, Rumors Are That Michaels Craft Store Is Moving Into Unit #16. Pur & Simple Announced That They Are Opening At 70 Consumers Drive Which Is The Same Building As Mastermind Toys, Pizza Delight, EB Games & CIBC. So Then They Must Be Going In Unit #2. And Right Now At The Moment, Unit #10 Is Christmas Discounters (Seasonal Location).

1. Walmart Supercentre
3. Sherwin Williams
4. Pizza Delight
5. EB Games

6. Mastermind Toys
7. CIBC
8. Best Buy
9. Swiss Chalet
11. Carter’s OshKosh

13. Reitmans
14. Pier 1 Imports
15. Old Navy
17. Winners
