I was looking out the window as my wife drove down the queensway this afternoon and I saw a line of four or five esroc cement mixers in the midst of a pour. So somethings happening at soba on this 10c gift of global warming day.

Still pouring the slurry wall I believe. Once that work is done the actual digging can begin!

Construction has started back up!

I've switched from live streaming the view to just posting timelapses the next day. Yesterdays was a good one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQmr7rOFNZ4

Love these videos - thanks for doing it!

I've heard rumours, but does anyone have an idea why construction stopped over the last couple months?

I was under the impression they couldn't continue building the slurry wall in winter because the water would be prone to freezing.

No idea if there is any truth to that though.

I considered buying an investment property here a few years ago. I have so many new grey hairs since then, I'm so glad I backed out.

Was it something to do with that large tank they pulled out of the ground a while back? I had heard they were doing some ground testing a few months back.

From letter to buyers:

Dear SoBa Purchasers –

The SoBa construction process involves a below grade/foundation slurry wall technology which does not work well during the colder months. For this reason, the construction site will close until early March. We will restart the foundation once the warmer weather arrives.

Regards,
Brad J. Lamb

Interesting story about Fortress which is working with Lamb on this project in Maclean's.

I attended one of Fortress sales pitch a number of years ago and did not come away with a good vibe.

It'll pick up considerably now that a) its not winter and b) true excavation has begun. Dry weather helps a lot, too, as the clay stays more solid than usual.

"Jimmy Joners" posts videos each day (or so) of the previous day's progress. Well worth looking every day.

I am SO glad I backed out of buying an investment condo here. The pace of this development has been absolutely ridiculous.

How is that possible when they were claiming it was 75% sold?

It's an investment oriented development but not a rental building. They're still selling units http://www.sobaottawa.com/flash.php

1 issue with investment-oriented building that I foresee (aside from the fact there will be a lot of tenants, which carries its own issues and is never ideal to begin with) is the competition will be fierce among landlords to find and retain quality tenants...It will only take 1 landlord to panic, for whatever reasons, to drop the asking price and others may have to follow suit...it is certainly better to have a tenant in there, with a lower price, than no tenant at all.

Will see how this all pans out, if and when the building is complete.
