I asked Joe Metlege about the building height. He replied that it's "about 210 feet" [64 metres] above street level on the Brunswick side.

That will be a Moxy hotel. It seems like the hotel options in the city improved in recent years (Muir, Sutton) even though it's been a difficult period due to unreliable tourism and a shift away from work travel. For a long time the hotels in Halifax were kind of mediocre and even the Nova Scotian hotel was not all that nice (not sure exactly what it looks like now).

I wonder if Halifax would ever get something like a Fairmont, maybe built along the waterfront or in the Cogswell area.

Is one or both of the newish hotels built on Brunswick St across from Scotia Square still being used to house the homeless? I was reading reviews on TripAdvisor about one of them and I gather it got trashed.

Hmmm...like the DoubleTree on Wyse Road, those are also Manga Hotels properties. Appears to be a developing part of their business model.

Progress seems a touch slower on this now that the structure is done, but its a large volume to fit out.

From Twitter: Great application for Cogswell instead of black plastic boxes. Could also be utilized HRM wide.

Most condos & apartments today are....not the best, aesthetically speaking.

NYC's The Fitzroy is proof that we can still build totally aspirational stuff today.

This thing just sings. Here's a bit about it:

Lol units in that building sell for US$5,000,000 to US$15,000,000. Definitely beautiful though!

Looking at the waterfront picture, showing the Casino location..... what a waste of space as the last portion of land on the waterfront before the Navy piers take over. This looks like it could have a substantially bigger building here....

Certainly very different economics but the higher labour costs, land costs, fees, and markup will be a big part of the unit price in Manhattan. Then there's whatever premium interior and amenity stuff this building has.

I bet it would be possible to build a nice looking alternative with materials like real stone or glazed tile, but without the gratuitous premium materials and detailing. Another cost-cutting measure would be to allow a highrise on top with cheaper cladding. There'd still be the question of whether private buyers value this stuff enough and what else you need for the premium buyers which in Halifax may be paying $1M or so for a unit in a really good location. I'd guess it's hard to sell a condo where half of the money goes into a really nice looking outer shell.

Something like The Governor is maybe 15% of the way to The Fitzroy if the starting point is Garden Crest, built circa 2000.
