I hope they leave the old 60's art behind. I want the new terminal to be completely cutting edge.

Is it just me or is Winnipeg increasingly becoming a drunk tank for the international jet set? It seems like there's at least one of these a month.

Unruly Irish passenger forces British Airways stop in Winnipeg
MAR 04 2007 06:10 AM

A passenger who'd been allegedly refused service of more alcohol was the culprit behind Saturday afternoon's jumbo jet diversion to Winnipeg.
The British Airways 747-400 series aircraft was on its way to Phoenix from London Heathrow, when it touched down in Winnipeg shortly before 4:30 p.m..

Police say the passenger had allegedly been drinking, and when the crew stopped serving him drinks, he got angry, and unruly.

38-year-old David Gerard McAuliffe of Ireland was escorted off the plane by Winnipeg Police, and taken to the Winnipeg Remand Centre. He'll remain there until he appears before a magistrate for several charges.

The plane took off again about two hours later.

CJOB's Brett Megarry reporting.

if you just plopped in the tourist shops, it would be 2007.

I was at the airport last sunday. The new parking garage is huge! plus they've got all the land cleared for the new terminal, plus partial roadwork. Can't wait until it's done!

while I was waiting for the plane in the old terminal, the floor was shaking for some reason (near gate T). I'm thinking I was right above the baggage unloading carousel.

The passenger traffic flow increased by 4.8% in 2006 at 3.387 Million and increased by cargo by 4.1% ... but I am still looking for the actual base wieght.

The new terminal is planned for future expansion phases. The first phase will be considerably larger than Winnipegs current terminal, which is greatly undersized.

Looks about late 70's early eighties, anyone remember the crappy restaurant right by the departure gate or the Mutual of Omaha air insurance vending machine. My god it's funny what sticks in the brain.

I was just in the airport this evening, you know...

If they just put a little more money into keeping up the place we would have one of the finest looking airports in the country.

Yeah i'm really curious about the new airport's interior, i'm wishing for some kind of artwork using lights like O'hare.

Wouldn't it look super if they had some kind of lighting effect on this ceiling?

Possibly having 2 centralized info booths
Multiple elevators
High ceilings
Better selection of retail stores

They don't want to keep it up because they'd prefer to build a new monument to themselves with the "fees" they extort from air travellers. Winnipeg would have been far more impressive with an immaculately restored (and expanded) modernist terminal from the glory days of air travel than it will be with a cookie-cutter design from 2005 that will be outdated by the time the building itself is finished.

I take it that you would have preffered renovations to the old terminal as opposed to building a new one? And also that you do not like the design of the new terminal?

I think the new terminal is fine, although the design, insofar as it has been revealed, seems a bit bland. I'm not convinced that the old one couldn't have been remodelled and expanded. I also don't appreciate having to pay for all of these grandiose new terminals through surcharges that seem to be totally out of control.

Is there a WAA surcharge for the construction of the new terminal? I haven't travelled since last fall, but can't remember paying an additional charge (like the $10 Vancouver fee). Does anyone have information on how it's getting funded?

I agree the rendering of the inside looks very...beige. Maybe they'll move the massive ceramic, steel, and plastic wall art from the current terminal into the new one to give it some colour.

From what I heard, one of the key reasons they are building a new terminal rather than expanding the old one is the infrastructure, not so much the passenger side. Apparently the are cramped at the base level where all the baggage and cargo is moved around (All those things that we don't see as passengers). Even airside, they are having problems with room.

It is probably much easier, logistically, to build a new one. But in the past they did expand the existing terminal (to the north) and I was hoping that they could simply add more to it this time in a similar way. I could definitely see that the current terminal is cramped, though.

I just generally don't like how Winnipeg builds great things and then tosses them aside for some new dream that is usually rooted in fears of "falling behind" some other completely different city. For example, Winnipeg has a great museum that is the only Michelin Guide 3 star attraction between Toronto and the Rockies and instead of taking care of it and building it up, we just let it fall apart and throw all our resources behind some new pipe dream of the Aspers. It had what was once the British Empire's largest department store and, instead of working hard to preserve it, Winnipeg knocks it down for a mediocre arena that doesn't even fit in the lot and is comparable to what you'd find in some third-tier U.S. city. Similarly, Winnipeg has a fantastic modernist air terminal that any architectural historian would drool over, and we just junk it because we're desperate to build a new one like everyone else is building. It's more the thoughtlessness of it all that bothers me.

i see your point, but at least it will be turned into a pretty good aviation museum....if they would have torn it down, that would have been a crime....this way we kind of get the best of both worlds...a sparkly new terminal and a restored old one with an exciting new function that will elevate the stature of the WCAM and might even make it a bit of a tourist attraction.
