Can't agree more. The era of self-confinement is over. We need to be louder now. And what better way than to express lit art on buildings.

Don't get too excited; they'll probably turn them off at 10pm each night so that they don't create "light pollution."

Smile Shangri-la, many of which stopped working

Actually I am disappointed that Ian Gillespie didn't go back and pay for replacement of the ones that never worked properly. I appreciate that it was a bit of a new technology at the time, but obviously the strata will have no interest in ever paying to replace them. It's a shame really.

Thankfully in this case it isn't strata so the developer isn't likely going to simply take the cheap/easy route and then move on to the next project like Gillespie did.

My understanding is the original panels were to be Luminous paint panels, not led's. Unfortunately the light absorbed during the day didn't hold the light long enough as well the background city lights minimized the effect. The panels installed I understand are light interference pigment painted (color changing) panels.

Could be that the the backlighting is intended to be a muted version of neon / LED stripes seen on other buildings (i.e. as you alluded to, West Pender Place).

its actually dichroic glass and changes color depending where you stand and on the quality of light...if you walk past the building at different times of day it changes its hue...when its sunny it looks brilliant green but when its cloudy it changes to blue and aqua

never trust a photo as it doesn't tell the whole story

I walked by this morning just after 8, and it looks great - much brighter than typical spandrel. My photos don't do it justice:

it kind of sets up a dialogue with the green panels on the tower in the foreground

are those panels lighted? or do they have a special reflective coating that makes them look that way? or both?

They don't look like much in that close up photo, but in the one from Nelson they look pretty great.

I think it depends on the viewing angle.
It looked really bright green from near 999 Seymour then it changes to blue when viewed from a sharper angle as you walk up the street.
I didn't see any red on it.

I wonder if it shows up bright from high up, like from Capitol?

Pics by me today (2nd is blurry, but shows colour difference)

Reflected clouds.

Sculptural clouds.

From the webcam, it looks like another level of dichroic glass has been installed.
