This design is such a bust compared to what they tried to propose to the City. We all must be more involved in the creation of our city council because lack of leadership and understanding of Austin's needs gets us what you see here. Never forget to vote.

I'm in this camp ha. I'll be honest, I much prefer the redesign. The original concept looked like it belonged in Miami and the podium was downright hostile. While this isn't way better, it's a little more human-scaled for the other side of 35, and I imagine the wall of mid-rise buildings consisting of this, Eleven, the Tyndall and on to the Plaza Saltillo development will be impressive in and of itself from 35 and whatever the reinvention of that highway eventually looks like.

and it looks like there's angled cuts (!) holding those balconies flush with the exterior. The south and west sides DO look really cool.

I think the bulk of the building, and the massive wall effect is horrendous, but the west elevation is pretty interesting.

I usually don't like big fat buildings but I kinda like that it will help create more of a valley effect with 35. As a North Austin person, I think it will go a long way toward stretching urbanism further north.

Also, it's not a stucco building.

The only stucco is a small patch underneath the windows. Look again. This thing will be mostly glass. And in a cool pattern. I think it will look cool. The view from the East doesn't really matter. Not many people are going to be looking at it from that angle.

This angle will be cool.

You can't tell from the elevations, but the side facing I-35 will have a slight outward curve which should add some visual interest.

Lol, not according to the NA. In their eyes this site is looming over the future prosperity of their community.

Didn't the NA reject a narrower but taller tower? Perhaps the developer is responding with wall for a view now. ...Never understood the fear of tall buildings (small footprints).

Houston should be ashamed of herself...she's been is a disaster.

-no grocery store
-no commercial units that bring entry level jobs (something she advocates for over high paying jobs)
-no additional market rate units to help stabilize pricing overall
-no senior living units to help people age in place in their neighborhood and among younger vibrant tenants (something I think is very important for health of seniors)

All for what, she saved 3 stories from being built? Top work Ora. She must have further political aspirations beyond the council...otherwise WTF?

Even the Chronicle had a write up that showed her true colors....against her own black neighbors.

She's been one of the worst council members, but her strategy is in line with general NIMBYism in Austin, which is praying we can all go back to 1985.

Instead of getting positive benefits for the area you are going to fight height, increase rent prices and get no neighborhood benefits... but it'll be 30 feet shorter, so success?

Previous versions of this project had one or two towers, but the NA fought a zoning change that would allow for a slight increase in height, more units as well as the grocery store. What is being built is allowed under current zoning, so the NIMBYs and City Council have no say in it.

That's good to hear. The blight can't disappear fast enough.

The site was of course a Safeway anchored shopping center before HEB and Walmart ran most other grocers out of town. But what was there before Safeway?
