For the most part he comes up with great concepts and they're usually cool spaces. Not sure if he rides them into the ground or sells and lets some schmuck, who always dreamed of owning a restro, ride the wave into the beach.

Smart money usually sells into the high and moves on.

Fatburger is opening in Bankers Hall! Replaces BK. This is a huge trade up.

I had no idea there was a BK downtown. I'll be honest, I occasionally crave a triple or quad stacker when I'm drunk. Other than that, I agree that it's a big jump to Fatburger.

The Double Stacker is probably the best way to spend $2 on fast food (On a Thursday, at least), so for that reason it's a bit lame that it's disappearing. Fatburger will be nice, though.

Wow, that's a huge win for downtown.

Everyone's going to get a little fatter. When I worked there, I never would have considered BK as an option, I would usually hit up Koryo if it was fast food, but I'd go out of my way for Fatburger.

I don't get why they took the fat fries off the menu in Canada- at least the last time I checked, which was last summer at Deerfoot Meadows, but they said the same thing I'd heard at FB on Davie in Vancouver: no more fat fries, just the skinny ones. The fat ones were like steak fries or the "chips" I orgasmed over in England. Gorgeous fat things- and thicker fries are actually less unhealthy, for what it's worth. I hope they bring them back, in Canada.

For foodcourt fast food downtown, I guess my top picks would be burritos at either Mucho Burrito or Taco Del Mar (both only open M-F in their respective foodcourts), the shrimp wonton soup at Sukiyaki (it's a meal), some of the offerings at Thai Express, and really that's about it. I know people rave about Chachi's but to me it's not that special. But there are also lots of foodcourts I've never been to since I don't work in the core.

And Smashburger should open next month in its 2 locations (but nothing inner city, yet). I'm really looking forward to another one of these "fancy" burger places having something more than beef on the menu.

Mostly just what I've read on their website.

I know they do localization of their menu to a larger degree than most places, no idea what that means for Calgary (more beefier beef?).

I ate at one in Phoenix in March and have eaten at one in Minnesota. IMO it's a step up from Fatburger/Five Guys.

Like freeweed mentioned, they will have a 'local' burger on the menu. That's usually the one I go after when I go there.

My son will be working at Smash Burger on 32nd Ave, his first job.

Apparently their "Smash Fries" are very good.

Let us know if you hear of an opening date.

I know they're starting training this week so I assume opening is a mere few weeks away - the NW location sadly might be a bit lagged based on what I've seen inside.

From the address of the NW location it looks like it is in the same building as The Blind Monk, are they taking over that spot?

The article says that is an invitation only event, but I would hope it opens to the public soon after.

The burger in the article looks tasty.

Nope. It's next door (actually rather a small space compared to the NE location, we'll have to see how this shakes out in terms of capacity). The Monk ain't going anywhere.

I fully expect the NE location to be swarmed for weeks, much like Five Guys was. I imagine the NW location will be the best bet for people to try this place out without a huge lineup. It's in the middle of bloody nowhere, comparatively.

Can the local burger for the NW location be a plain burger on a Kaiser bun with extra oil?
