Not the greatest looking building, but IMO is one of the most powerful on the skyline. Any shot of Midtown and this building is always visible.

Question: Is this the largest building in NYC in terms of square footage?

no, it's second (3,140,000 sq ft) after 55 water street (3.8 million square feet). but yeah, metlife is one of the most massive towers in NYC and, generally speaking, in the US.

Only 3.1 and 3.8 million square feet? That is cute. Here in Michigan we have the Renaissance Center (GM world headquarters (built by Ford oddly enough)) 5.6 million square feet, and the Chrysler world headquarters 5.3 million square feet. Even Chicago has Sears at 4.5 million square feet.

Seriously though. Met Life has really grown on me. It makes me think of Rockefeller Center since it is so wide and narrow. And like Rockefeller, I think it looks best from its narrow side.

P.S. Someone really needs to make a graphic of the Chrysler world headquarters. Its main office tower is not very tall at only 15 or 16 floors, but it soars above everything else north of Troy in the northern suburbs.

Yeah, 55 water street will likely have the most square feet for a very long time

Walter Gropius assisted Emory Roth in the design of this building. There is a commemorative plaque at the base of the building noting his contribution.

It's more than that, Gropius was the the designer, Roth & Sons just the architect of record (basically they did the drawings and coordination). Gropius was responsible for turning the building 90 degrees and [killing/capturing/terminating] the view along Park Avenue.

I have a love hate relationship with this building.

Isn't it one of the most hated buildings in New York?

It's a very powerful building and I actually love it.

Love it or hate it, it's without a doubt a prime fixture on the skyline.

7. National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder Colorado
6. Boston City Hall
5. Whitney Museum of American Art
4. Yale Library of Art
3. PanAm Building
2. Salk Institute
1. Empire State Plaza

I don't think the MetLife/PanAm Bldg is brutalist. I'd really throw it more into the International style. Nice list, that said.

I really like the MetLife Building. As others have said over and again, this is really an iconic building. You see it and can say, "Oh, I know right where I am, and I know just what that is".
