Reading is the "poorest" city in America in that it had the highest poverty rate (among cities over 65,000 people) in the country in 2010 according to the Census: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/27/us...pagewanted=all

As as the article explains, its a relatively recent thing though (as opposed to the likes of Gary and Camden which have been struggling for decades) which would explain the lack of decay in the city. And having the highest poverty rate doesn't mean its average incomes are the lowest, nor does it have to directly correlate with crime or abandonment.

Very nice city and pictures! Thanks for sharing and showing the beauty of Reading, PA.

I like the architecture of its buildings.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain!

That's what i have been thinking too. It is way too good of an urban jewel to loose.

I wouldn't mind being impoverished on those kinds of streets

Well put. Architecture is both the master concealer and the master revealer. Sometimes you have to dig deeper.

I'm probably among the few people who chose to spend one of my college spring breaks in Johnstown. I found it thoroughly enjoyable, but I wouldn't assume to understand it, nor any other history of such gain and loss, based solely on the appearance of its historical structures. That said, great job with the photos.
