DLF, Dubai Firm to develop $12 bln project in India

DUBAI (Reuters) - India's DLF Ltd will develop a $12 billion housing and commercial real estate project near the technology and outsourcing hub of Bangalore, DLF's Dubai-based partner in the development said on Tuesday.

Dubai-government owned Limitless will own half the venture that will develop the 9,884 acre Bidadi Township on the outskirts of the southern city, Limitless said in a statement.

Bidadi will have homes for around 750,000 people as well as commercial and retail buildings. It is one of five townships Indian authorities are planning around Bangalore, Limitless said.
Limitless is owned by the government's Dubai World agency which is building three islands shaped as palm-trees with hotels and villas off the coast of Dubai.

Developers such as DLF, India's biggest by market value, are building more homes for people on lower incomes in India, a country that has about 53 million families earning $2,500-$5,000 a year.

Business Objects Opens India Development Center in Bangalore

Business Objects, a provider of Business Intelligence (BI) solutions, has opened its India Development Center (IDC) in Bangalore.

"Our Bangalore site reinforces our focus on India and our commitment to tapping India's excellent intellectual capital," said Keith Budge, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Asia Pacific and Japan, Business Objects. "In addition, it extends our aim of operating on a truly global delivery scale both from a research and development (R&D) and a business perspective."

"The IDC, the latest of our R&D facilities, will enable us to effectively maximize our R&D resources while maintaining our focus on bring localized products faster to the market," said Budge.

"Business Objects has an extensive history and tradition of excellence in research, we have the largest and the most powerful R&D group in the industry focused solely on BI, with a 95% track record of on-time project delivery. These industry-leading statistics attest to the emphasis we place on R&D and we are confident that the IDC will mirror the high standards we have set for ourselves globally," added Budge.

The IDC, located in Salarpuria Softzone, an upcoming IT hub in Bangalore, expands Business Objects' global R&D footprint. Its other three global R&D facilities are housed in Vancouver, Canada; Levallois, France; and Shanghai, China. The IDC currently employees over 300 engineers and plans to add another 200 staff over the next three years.

"The BI market is growing at double-digit rates, necessitating the need for rapid and sustained innovation," said Srivibhavan Balaram, Vice President and Head, India Development Center, Business Objects. "The IDC will play a critical role in enabling us to realize our vision of what we call BI 2.0, or next-generation BI, through the development of cutting-edge products that map to the current global trends in BI and the market evolution we see forthcoming."

Business Objects said that as with its other R&D facilities, the IDC not only contributes to the company's overall research mandate, but also holds end-to-end responsibility for one of its core product lines, the Mid-Market range. All future Mid-Market products for Business Objects globally will be conceived and developed at the IDC. This effectively enables the IDC to take full ownership of the product right from conceptualization to market release.

The IDC is also mandated to deliver critical elements of the manageability framework for Business Objects' Enterprise Platform, BOXI. This includes life-cycle management and the management portal. Also, the IDC is positioned as the .Net competency center for the company'’s worldwide R&D organization.

Business Objects said the IDC is designed to be a center of innovation for the company globally and has a strong internal process to incubate technology and business ideas from ideation-to-delivery. Several patent applications from the IDC are pending validation and the facility also plans to collaborate closely with several top educational institutions in Bangalore to sponsor research in the area of BI.

Swedish IT co launches Dev Center in Bangalore

EPiServer, a Sweden headquartered global web content management company, on Thursday announced the launch of its Asia Pacific business operations in Bangalore.

"Our India office is an essential part of EPiServer's global expansion strategy and will support our global system integrators and solution partners in Asia, Middle East and American markets," said EPiServer AB Founder and Chief Technical Officer (CTO) Mikael Runhem.

In addition to this, the firm has established an R&D team in Bangalore to support the development organisation in Europe and continue the expansion of its product offering into new areas, he said, launching the Asia Pacific business hub.

"We are looking at a 30-member team including the R&D for our office here by the end of this year," Runhem said.

In addition to 2,000 customers and 2,900 worldwide installations, EPiServer has gathered marquee customers in India, such as Nasscom and the Knowledge Management Community of Bangalore.

Empowering global solution partners like Satyam, EPiServer is currently targeting the mid-market segment with their community and web 2 functionality.

"We see an increasing demand for advanced web platforms such as our EPiServer CMS," he said, adding the firm which has five partners at present "is looking at around 40 partners by the end of this year."

EPiServer India President Sunny Ghosh said, "We know there are over 1,000 web projects delivered to our customers in Europe every day. Demand exceeds supply. We plan to narrow this gap with the help of our Indian partners and forsee that India will need 300 EPiServer developers in the next 18 months."

Bidadi all set for a boom

BANGALORE: Swanky high-rises, roads of international standards, sprawling residential enclaves, shopping arcades, club houses, golf course, lush green lung spaces, clean water bodies ... this might turn out to be one of the largest integrated townships proposed in Karnataka.

The Bidadi Knowledge City is taking shape with the government awarding the project to construction major Delhi-based DLF company. Spread over 9,000 acres, conceived at a cost of Rs 23,000 crore, the project envisages a work-live-play concept.
The township will include an urban centre, town centre, office space, non-polluting industries and village centre on the banks of Byramangala Reservoir spreading all the way up to Bangalore-Mysore Highway.

While the total area identified for the project is 9,175 acres, the net developable area will be 8,335 acres.

According to the detailed project plan submitted by the developer, the core area will have massive glass facade office, high-rises with scenic Byramangala reservoir in the background. After the core area follows commercial development, then residential and finally village centres. KIADB, which will acquire the land, will get Rs 57 lakh as development charge per acre. A 60:40 ratio sharing is worked out as compensation to land losers. For every acre acquired, the landowner stands to gain 8,300 sqft of developed land inside the township.

Bangalore realty software firm bags Dubai order

BANGALORE: In4velocity Systems, a Bangalore-based real estate and property development software firm, has bagged a lucrative deal valued at Rs 30 million from Omniyat Properties of Dubai.

As part of the Omniyat Holdings group, Omniyat Properties is a privately held real estate investment and development firm in the UAE.

Headquartered in Dubai, Omniyat was set up by Almasa Holdings, a group of IT hardware and software related firms, founded in 1995 by Dubai-based entrepreneur Mehdi Amjad and his Kuwait-based partner Esmail Janathi. Almasa had posted revenue of $400 million in 2006.

In4velocity CEO Rahul Chawla said in a statement here late Wednesday that the deal would enable his firm to enter the real estate market in the Gulf for licensing the company's software products and providing services to prospective clients.

"We find the Gulf a big market for expanding our presence, as real estate is still booming there. We estimate market size for licensing our products and services to be about $50 million," said Chawla.

The company's enterprise resource management system (ERMS) application -- In4Suite RE -- is an integrated end-to-end solution for real estate and property development firms.

"Our suite of products can automate business processes right from land acquisition to engineering, from purchase to sales and from rental to property management," Chawla asserted.

Unlike conventional enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, In4Suite RE enables data analytics and data mining.

Karnataka will invite global tenders for the proposed Mono Rail project in Bangalore. The state Cabinet met here last week and decided to call for tenders.

The project has been proposed to decongest vehicular traffic within the city. The Mono Rail will act as feeder service for the Metro Rail project, which is being implemented in Bangalore.

The state government has proposed to take up both projects for the city as Metro Rail alone cannot address the growing public transportation needs.

The Asian Infrastructure Consortium, a private company, is in the process of preparing the detailed project report (DPR) for Mono Rail. Initially, the Mono Rail will run on a trial basis (18 km connecting commercial hub of the city — Majestic — to Kanakapura Road on Bangalore’s southern tip).

“The Asian Infrastructure Consortium has sought 60 days to prepare the DPR. Once the DPR is submitted, the government will invite tenders from global infrastructure companies,” Karnataka’s primary & secondary education minister Basavaraja Horatti said.

Malaysia airlines to increase its flights to Chennai and Bangalore

Kuala Lumpur: Estimating more Indians as tourists to Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines has decided to increase its flight frequency to Chennai and Bangalore.

The Malaysian national carrier will use Airbus 330-300 and Airbus 330-200 aircraft, increasing seating capacity from the present 2,920 to 3,607, and the new winter schedule will see Malaysia Airlines add another two weekly flights to Chennai, taking the total flights in a week to nine, and will fly to Bangalore four times a week.

Air Arabia connects Bangalore and Sharjah

Mumbai: Air Arabia, the first international low-cost airline to fly to India, has announced that it will start services to Bangalore from 15th October 2007, operating four flights a week between this city, India's IT capital, and its hub in Sharjah. Bangalore will also become the airline's ninth destination in India.
Air Arabia already connects Ahmedabad, Chennai, Jaipur, Kochi, Mumbai, Nagpur and Thiruvanathapuram to the Gulf. From 1st October 2007 it also began operations to the south Indian city of Coimbatore.

New ITC hotel restores a bit of green Bangalore

Ready to welcome guests from Oct 5, The Royal Gardenia is located at Residency Road, one of the busiest avenues in Bangalore’s upscale central business district.

Its location overlooking the century-old Bangalore Club — of which former British prime minister Winston Churchill was a member and whose debt of Rs.13 has been written off — is one of the hotel’s USPs.

Inside, there’s the wind-cooled atrium lobby, with its vertical hanging gardens leading to the central courtyard garden, in the midst of which stands the multi-pillared Lotus Pavillon, with its sloping roofs covered with a lawn of fresh green grass. The hotel tries to blend nature in each of its aspects.

“The hotel is a tribute to Bangalore the Garden City and the green cover it once used to host. We’re trying in our own special way to recreate a slice of Bangalore’s greenery in the hotel,” Nakul Anand, chief executive, ITC Hotels Division, told IANS.

“An eco-responsible ethos is an inherent part of our system and in creating ITC Royal Gardenia, the challenge was to see how luxury and responsibility could be in harmony. Bangalore has always been India’s ultimate garden city and in our small way we hope to be able to give back to the city what time took away.”

In recent years, Bangalore has lost around 50,000 trees to various “development” projects, according to a report by the Environment Support Group (ESG), an NGO and part of Hasiru Usiru (Greenery is Life), which is a conglomeration of various city-based community organisations and has been in the forefront of protests against the “illogical destruction” of Bangalore’s greenery.

The Royal Gardenia gives back the greenery with its vertical hanging gardens, said to be the first hotel in India to use the concept. The vertical gardens are in the hotel’s main lobby and at The Cubbon Pavilion, its multi-cuisine coffee shop. The gardens rise right to the ceiling.

“The vertical gardens are created to bring the mood of tropical forests to the interiors of the hotel. The vertical gardens have used a soil-free gravity-defying method to grow plants. The plants are supported by a vertical wall and divided into two layers,” said Shona Adhikari, consultant of ITC Limited Hotels Division.

The plants are watered through a state-of-the-art drip irrigation system placed at the top. The hotel management has ensured that the lighting system is energy efficient.

The four strips of vertical gardens at the lobby have 1,500 plants each. The one in the coffee shop reaches the second floor and has around 25,000 plants. The plants belong to the Philodendron family and have all been grown locally.

The 300-room hotel spread over 11 floors has been designed by architect Rajinder Kumar, while the interiors have been created by Britain-based designer Francesca Basu.

“Since nature is the theme, I have drawn inspiration from different layers of life forms and each floor follows this theme through colours, motifs and textures. The themes are based on moods and representations of various elements of nature, ranging from stones and fossils, to earth, trees, wood, water, fire, foliage, animal life, flowers, the winged species, including birds and butterflies, sky and cloud,” said Basu.

Other prominent features of the hotel include a banquet hall spread across 8,000 sq ft and a party hall measuring 2,500 sq ft. There are also three meeting rooms, a board room and a business centre. ITC’s Kaya Kalp Spa, with eight treatment rooms, jacuzzis, sauna and steam baths, a salon and gym with latest fitness equipment are parts of the experience.

“The hotel has lip-smacking and exclusive cuisines, to be served in signature restaurant Kebabs and Kurries. The menu for the restaurant has been drawn from ITC’s heritage restaurants — Peshawri, Dum Pukht and Dakshin,” said Adhikari.

At The Cubbon Pavilion — named after Sir Mark Cubbon, who gave Bangalore its very own Cubbon Park, the city’s largest lung space — along with sipping coffee and enjoying breakfast, patrons get an idea of the Cubbon Park, as large photographs of it cover the walls.

“ITC’s branded restaurant West View, known for its Mediterranean-style grills, is expected to open in November, followed by opening of ITC’s first Japanese restaurant Edo, during Christmas and New Year celebrations,” said Adhikari.

Fortis enters Mysore thru Cauvery Hospital tie-up
