wonderful thread. Atlanta has some nice architecture amongst the highrises. I like the symphony tower. Wow, a lot of trees for sure.

No, it's definitely not Kennesaw Mountain. Kennesaw's silhouette is very distinctive (see 6th pic up in first set looking southwest from Lenox) and I see it almost everyday, so I'd know it. The peak in question is pratically due-north of Midtown (Kennesaw is not visible unless you are looking west-northwest from Midtown), possibly in North Fulton or Forsyth County.

Notice it's visible again in the Perimeter Center pic (9th down in the first set) and it's a lot closer. I'll probably google it...

I'm could have sworn the original picture in question disappeared.

Another set of photos was posted you probably saw that set first when you replied.

Actually that is Burnt Mountain in east Cobb County I think. Awesome photos anyhow.

Sketching you beat me to it...

I used Google Earth to pinpoint it and it is Sweat Mountain, the 2nd tallest peak in Metro Atlanta (after Kennesaw) standing at 1,688 feet.

Absolutely. Exactly what I was thinking, newsupastar. Great set of pics, KC, I can't wait to see the downtown set too! You've definately captured one aspect of what current residents see every day here...tower cranes everywhere! Five or six visible in the photo above, and that's just Buckhead!

I have to wonder if some of those people that are "baffled" or don't "get it" are thrown off by the amazing canopy of trees in Atlanta. To someone that is unfamiliar with the city, looking at these pictures may give the impression that Atlanta is nothing more than a few clusters of skyscrapers surrounded by a forest.

Hundreds of thousands of people LIVE under that canopy of trees. We're talking very TALL trees here, so their homes are not visible in these overhead photos.

People sometimes say that Atlanta has no single, distinguishing characteristic that sets it apart from other business-oriented cities. Absolutely not true!

You'd be hard-pressed to find another major urban area in the USA that can rival Atlanta's verdant, lush landscape.

Atlanta's layout is definetly different from alot of big cities.

It appears to have 2 downtowns (downtown and midtown) that arent really that close to each other. it sorta looks like 2 sections of building with trees in between.

But I think Atlanta has the potential to grow and look more like an Asian city with alot of buildings and how everything there is modern compared to alot of older cities.

There aren't a bunch of trees between Midtown and Downtown.
If you are basing that on the photos then I can understand that but these photos are of Buckhead, Perimeter Center and a couple of upper Midtown with none of Downtown. The photo that shows all the trees is in Buckhead looking southward towards Midtown and Downtown. There is a sizeable stretch between Buckhead and the rest of the core however but it is all confined within the city limits.

In terms of the layout of Atlanta, yes it is different. It is probably more linear than most cities.

That's not the main CBD... there's a downtown but he didn't get to it yet. Atlanta has a downtown, midtown, buckhead, and perimeter/sandy springs skylines.

Fantastic shots. I am overdue for another trip to Atlanta.

These shots also shows just how young the city's skylines are. It's amazing how relatively entire skylines have been created since the last time I was there.
