I'd be interested to see what Edmonton would like look with a few of the big Calgary scrapers, and vice versa. I love Manulife Place!!

^ Yup, it's an old building now but it's one of my favorite Calgary towers. So angular.

I'd love to see Edmonton with a Nexen or maybe a Bow Valley Square...

Btw, what software would be the best if one wanted to take on creating a 3-d model of future downtown Edmonton?

^ I would say google sketchup

You're not going to get professional grade renders or high poly models out of it, but that is not the point. I use sketchup all the time, and it has a relatively easy learning curve (www.google.com/sketchup)

All of the Edmonton 3d buildings featured in Google Earth have been done by Newfangled. Working with Google Earth and Sketchup is awesome.

With sketchup you can also get professional rendering software that renders your models so they are at least presentable... Ill provide some examples in a sec

For rendering... using sketchup 7 and IDX (free):

1) Before:

2) After:

3) Conceptual:

there are also other programs out there (Blender3d - which is a Free alternative to the very expensive 3dMax); etc.

Get Google Earth, fire it up, and make sure 3d buildings are on - you will see Newfangleds work there (quite impressive might I add)

Sweet... I have a few skyscraper designs I'd love to see posted on here in relation to the skyline, including an icon for the Edmonton skyline...

Since it's being discussed, has anybody had to deal with any sort of BIM software like VICO?

The learning curve was very steep, but i would imagine it has capabilities far beyond whats being discussed here.

I would love to see how dominating the Bow would look in E-town.

That looks so retarded! Thanks for the laugh, newfangled. Although the Bow doesn't look too bad in Edmonton. But man does that Burj look stupid in Edmonton.

Y'know, the Bow wouldn't look half bad in our skyline.

This really gives one an idea of just how tall the Burj really is (A: ridiculously).

Great work, gives you a perspective on our skyline as it relates to other tall buildings in other cities.

Should put the Eifel Tower over in Refinery Row. Looks like Petro Canada's been building a mini one there anyway.

I like the way the Bow looks in that skyline. I think anything up to twice the height of Manulife would look ok, but higher than that not so much.
