Is this not the 2nd time they've closed now? Only been to them once before the change and I wasn't impressed then and never went back.

I doubt Feenie is shedding a tear after the way he was tossed out of his own restaurants by his 'friendly investors'.

Does Kits need another Joeys / Bread Garden / Cactus Club?

I'm not aware of any of them in Kitsilano.

I see Denny's closed on Davie St. Now there's nowhere on the downtown peninsula to get Moons Over My Hammy.

Now you'll have to make the trek to 1200 block Broadway for your Denny's Late Nite Fix.

Yeah, that's actually closer but I was visiting someone at St.Pauls. There's still the one on SW Marine as well.

wow thats surprising - I know they were a franchise location and they were having problems with some workers - apparently they brought in all foreign staff on work visas who were complaining about unfulfilled promises - i wonder if thats why they closed? they always seemed to be busy

not a closing, but related to an opening, the sign for ki is finally up at the shangri-la.

[mods - change this thread title to resto opening/closing?]

Went to Ensemble tonight, it's the new place where Corner Bistro was on Thurlow and it's run by Dale McKay who was at Lumiere/Db Bistro. The location has been cursed with I think 4 attempts in recent years. Hate to say I don't think it's going to be lifted this time around.
Food is medium plates meant to be shared apparently. We ordered 4 dishes and sure enough they brought them all out at once making it impossible to eat them warm, not to mention they didn't even fit on the table. Food wasn't bad nor was it great. The Rissoto was a little too al dente for our liking. The black cod in pork broth was pretty good but absolutely tiny for $18 (was probably a $12-14 dish tops). The potato gnocchi was so so, probably would've been better if we had been able to eat it warm. The Mussels and fries were probably the best bang for the buck as there was plentiful, wasn't a big fan of the curry sauce though. We decided to try a dessert to see if it would win us back, we ordered the pavlova and I hate to say it was the worst pavlova I've ever had.
Service was pretty bad too, not rude at all, just inattentive and invisible when they shouldn't have been. I'll give them a pass on the service though as they just opened and obviously have kinks to work out (even though they should've been worked out before opening).

All in all, I'd say wait a couple more weeks before giving it a shot. Hopefully they will be bringing their A game by then.

Some downtown Cactus Club updates from today's BIV online:

Quote:
Construction delays mean the English Bay Cactus Club will not open until at least September and, more likely, October, owner Richard Jaffray told Business in Vancouver May 13.

“We were hoping to get it open for the summertime, for sure, but it wasn’t possible, given the extent of construction and some of the issues we had to deal with to get the site ready,” Jaffray said.

The setback isn’t slowing down Jaffray’s plans to expand his 20-restaurant chain, which has locations across B.C. and Alberta.

Two other new locations are currently under construction in Metro Vancouver. Jaffray expects to open restaurants in Abbotsford in August and at the Vancouver Convention Centre in early 2012.
Some other comments from the article:
Quote:
The cost of all this construction is enough for Jaffray to realize that the harmonized sales Tax (HST) has benefits for restaurateurs.
Quote:
Stiffened penalties for getting caught driving with a blood alcohol level above 0.05% has “definitely had an impact on the business,” Jaffray said.
Quote:
His bottom line took another hit when the Christy Clark government raised B.C.’s minimum wage by $0.75 to $8.75 on May 1.
