The issue wasn't about Solo Serve, it was about the buildings next to it.

The Historic and Design Review Commission voted 5-2 in favor of allowing developers to proceed with plans for a 21-story, 252-room hotel on the River Walk. The project will essentially demolish and gut a majority of the blighted downtown city block on the southeast corner of Soledad and Houston streets.

The proposed AC Hotel by Marriott calls for demolition of the former Solo Serve building save for the River Walk-facing wall, and maintaining the facades of next-door structures collectively known as the Clegg Company Building along the 100 block of Soledad Street. The historic red-brick Book Building on East Houston Street that overlooks the San Antonio River would be “rehabilitated” to become the hotel’s main pedestrian entrance.

The hotel would include 12 levels of hotel rooms, eight levels of above-ground parking, and about 10,000 sq. ft. of street and river-level restaurant and retail space.
Phase II calls for a highrise residential building.

It hasn't; at least not in relationship to the proposed new design. They still need to return to the HDRC for final approval. The boarding up of the Book Building is to secure the property.

I know there hasn't been much news on this development but decided to get a shot of the potential site!

It's a good thing the Book Building wasn't gutted and turned into another hotel lobby, it's a beautiful building and deserves a better fate. It's a good thing the Veramendi Building wasn't demolished. I like how both those buildings relate to each other, and to the river. By all means, bombs away on Solo Serve but let's appreciate what's been spared by this project collapsing.

The one on the right is fine. The one on the left...meh.

However, if nothing is happening in either one, then they're really not relating to the river in a meaningful way. Hopefully somebody will put them to good use.

Couldn't agree more. Solo Serve is probably the worst building downtown, but that whole block is just a goldmine of old school urbanism. Hopefully a better developer will find a way to incorporate all those cool little buildings and courtyards.

Weston just bought the Savoy Building at the corner of Houston and Soledad, which the proposed hotel would have wrapped around. Maybe now Weston will have the opportunity to expand his footprint further.

That would be ideal.
