The US firm Gensler and the Shanghai-based Architectural Design & Research Institute of Tongji University will soon deliver more details about the skyscraper, whose construction is planned to start this year
I really hope that construction will start within six months... but I'm skeptical.
I'm very happy that Gensler's design was selected though. Pelli, Foster, SOM & KPD have produced amazing designs all around the world, but it's good to see a new name once in a while.

This tower might reach 600m according to the Gensler website;

Gensler Selected to Design Shanghai Landmark

Sustainable Tower Creates a Vertical City
Gensler has been selected to design the 600-meter Shanghai Center in Shanghai's Luijiazui financial district. The tower will become a new landmark on the skyline of Pudong and set a new benchmark for sustainable building performance and technological innovation. Headed by Shanghai Tower & Construction Co., Ltd, the project development team selected Gensler after an extensive competition between local and international design firms.

Thornton Tomasetti structural engineers, Cosentini Associates mechanical engineers and the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tongji University, serving as the Local Design Institute, will support Gensler. Ground breaking is expected in December of 2008 with completion in 2014.

Comprising 4,090,285 square feet (380,000 square meters), the tower will be one of the tallest in the world.

A Design for Shanghai and China
The unique double skin structure creates vertical concentric spaces with the exterior skin enclosing atria and an interior building. The tower's soft triangular shape rotates clockwise as it rises upwards to culminate in an open-top design, reinforcing the impression of movement and dynamism that symbolizes Shanghai's success as a world city and the emergence of modern China.

Gensler's tower design also harmonizes with two adjacent Luijaizui buildings – the Jin Mao tower and the World Financial Center – to create a new triumvirate, dubbed the "three brothers."

A Vertical City
Conceived as a "vertical city," the mixed-use design includes nine atrium sky gardens, office space, high-end retail, residential housing and public amenities. The tower is situated within a public park, with an open amphitheater for civic and public events.

Sustainable Technologies
Shanghai Center will incorporate the latest sustainable design and renewable energy systems, such as innovative skin technologies. The project will seek a high level of LEED certification by the China Green Building Council (in association with the U.S. Green Building Council).

That's typical of the Chinese media. Why are you surprised? What would surprise me is if the media made it sound like Taiwan WASN'T part of China.

This building looks amazing! Can't wait to see it underway.

So by the looks of it it's going to be taller than the CS right? Would it take second place for tallest building on earth?

Dont forget about AC Towers in Dubia or City Tower Parque Anhembi in Sao Paulo, which ae both proposed to be taller than this one,but shorter than BD,and then theres Al Burj. Theres also Moscow tower, also 2000 feet. if these are all built(unlikely) then itll be No.5.

If you're referring to the Russia Tower, it is already under construction. However, the latest speculations say that Shanghai Center will be well over 600 meters tall, maybe as tall as 685m. Who knows...

^^ I don't even believe it will be taller than 580m even after reading Gensler's website annoucement (600m). We have been cheated too many times abotu SC height already.

Wish I'm wrong, 680m would be perfect.

580m is perfect. If it was over 600m, it would make the Jin Mao and WFC seem small and diminish their brilliance.

The renders shown above certainly depict Shanghai Centre at between 650 and 700 metres tall... time will tell what the final height will be...

Same opinion.
Besides, if it ends up being insanely tall, the construction will take forever.

With so many supertalls under construction or being proposed, it is almost impossible to tell which one will be the tallest. One thing is certain, it won't be here in America. Good try though Chicago Spire and Freedom Tower.
