Shelby Farms nabs $1.64M grant from state for more trails

The money will go toward constructing much of the initial trail system within Shelby Farms, connecting it to residential areas and other greenways, such as the Shelby Farms Greenline and the Wolf River Greenway.

CN Railway pushes logistics park

Demolition begins at site of failed 28-acre Midtown Memphis development

Demolition workers have started removing the blight of the failed Washington Bottom development in Midtown. "I'm extremely pleased that Lehman Brothers has stepped up to the plate," neighborhood activist Candice Hawkinson said of the bank holding company that owns 38 vacant buildings on about 28 acres southeast of Poplar and Cleveland.

The Washington Bottom development was approved a few years ago for an area bounded by Poplar, McNeil, Court and Cleveland. But the project never materialized and neighbors complained that the site had become an eyesore, with some buildings inhabited by squatters. The property was scheduled to be cleaned up more than a year ago, but little has happened other than the addition of a security fence. However, demolition work began this week on McNeil, where Frank Shaw of Memphis Wrecking Co Inc. finishes off three houses Thursday.

Milestone Close For Hickory Hill’s Marina Cove

The next step in the saga of a vacant Hickory Hill apartment complex could be announced Tuesday evening. After years of working with the Atlanta-area owners of the Marina Cove Apartments, the city of Memphis in June was finally able to talk Water Gardens LLC of Smyrna, Ga., into selling the complex to a nonprofit community development corporation.

MedVet Memphis Builds New Cordova Facility

MedVet Memphis LLC has applied for a $3 million permit to build a 17,700-square-foot, two-story facility at 555 Trinity Creek Cove. The office will replace MedVet’s current facility at 850 N. Germantown Parkway, suite 105. Land is currently being cleared to prepare for building the facility, said Katie Wassmer of Thompson & Berry PR, which represents MedVet.

MedVet is the only veterinary hospital within 200 miles with full-time board-certified veterinary specialists, a designation given to vets who have undergone several additional years of training to specialize in fields such as oncology or dermatology. The new facility will house eight exam rooms and a double surgery suite, as well as equipment for CT scans, ultrasounds and endoscopy procedures; a Wi-Fi-equipped waiting room; a boardroom; and meeting space for more than 70 people.

Memphis-based archimania designed the facility to be calming to pets and owners. Features include larger exam rooms and natural light. The facility is within walking distance of the Shelby Farms off-leash dog park, and MedVet plans to partner with the park throughout the year for events and special offers, Wassmer said. Though specific plans haven’t been made yet, Wassmer said Shelby Farms and MedVet share the goal of helping animals.

Memphis Zoo to open outdoor ice skating rink this winter

The Memphis Zoo is bringing ice skating back to the heart of the city. The zoo will open an outdoor ice skating rink from Nov. 19 to Jan. 31, the city's first since 1976. The 5,400-square-foot ice rink will be located in the picnic area between the Northwest Passage and Teton Trek exhibits.

The economics of a move to Olive Branch would apparently have to trump Pinnacle Airlines Corp.’s desire to remain in Memphis, a Pinnacle official suggested in an internal document.
