Many of them are still around but look a lot smaller in a modern photo. Commerce Court North for example doesn't dominate the skyline today, but it's still a great building.

Old pictures of Detroit or Buffalo are kind of sad, but I think Toronto is a much better and much more interesting city now than it was back when these were taken.

indeed. this overall could easily be considered Canada's finest skyscraper architecture imo. only now with the Bow has the word "iconic" had as much meaning when describing a Canadian office tower/skyscrapers.

Yup, as far as those photos go it's mostly all still there, but massively overshadowed by larger modern towers.

Scotia and the Living Shangri-La should be considered in that exclusive category as well.
I'd argue Scotia was the best skyscraper built in Canada between TD and the BOW with only Shangri-la coming really close, imo. That counts for something.

So would I. I'd also consider it to be the best residential to get built in the US in a very long time.

it is nothing short of a masterpiece. it is one building that has instantly become a classic and i consider it to be a work of art. i tell the truth when i describe New York as a fine arts gallery that has this epic masterpiece and many others on display. bravo.

Totally agree!

As far as Canada goes, I'd say Royal Bank Plaza still beats Scotia anyday.

For a skyscraper built in one of Canada's "have-not" cities... in the 90s no less... One London Place is definitely a great Canadian skyscraper.

It's pretty PoMo IMO. Nothing spectacular or unique about it. Just about every major city has a building similar to One London.

Hell ya! Always great to see some love for One London Place.

On a side note, OLP was originally planned to have a shorter twin, and rumors are it may finally get built!

Yepper! I have heard that rumour as well.

The tower itself (in the original plan) was to be much shorter, about 88 meters tall I think. With a spire that would bring the overall architectural height to 110 meters. So regardless, it would be a rather large player in the skyline as the Talbot Centre Twins are both 88 meters as well.

With the Renaissance and Crown twins going up along with a lot of rumour and speculation about other major developments, I could definitely see some validity to the rumour about OLP 2. Would be great to further densify London's office market.

Toronto from August 1971 with Commerce Court West, Sheraton Hotel, and 145 King West under construction.

Nice find, that was a pretty impressive boom for its time. Also, didn't know that the roof of Commerce Court was so messy back then (with 3 or 4 antennas).

I like London Place quite a bit too. It's one of the best post modern office buildings to go up in Canada.
