Kaohsiung Main Public Library tops '10 must visit' list

CNA file photo

The Kaohsiung Main Public Library (高雄市立圖書館總館) has topped a list of "the 10 libraries you must visit" in Taiwan, according to the results of an online survey published Thursday.

The survey, conducted by the Library Association of the Republic of China (Taiwan) between June 10 and Sept. 30, asked respondents to choose their favorite facilities from a list of 68 libraries around the country.

Voters were allowed to cast online ballots for three different libraries on the list from the same Internet account every day. The association did not say how many votes were cast.

The Kaohsiung library, which garnered more than 520,000 votes to win the honor, opened late last year and has no beams or columns because of its suspended structure design, giving it a transparent feeling. It is also the first library in Taiwan to have a theater.

A small library (中華飲食文化圖書館) run by the Chinese Dietary Culture Foundation in Taipei that houses 20,000 dietary books took second place, and New Taipei City Library (新北市立圖書館), which provides round-the-clock service, finished third.

They were followed by Min Hsiung Library in Chiayi County (嘉義縣民雄鄉立圖書館), which can access e-books on Taichung's National Library of Public Information (國立公共資訊圖館) system, and National Central Library (國家圖書館), which has a comprehensive collection of Chinese culture classics.

Rounding out the top 10 were the Kaohsiung Public Library system's Dadong Arts Library (高雄市立圖書館大東藝術圖書館) and its Hsiaokang branch (高雄市立圖書館小港分館), Providence University's Luking Library (靜宜大學蓋夏圖書館), the Kaohsiung Literary Museum (高雄文學館) library and the National Taitung University Library and Information Center (國立台東大學國書資訊館).

Somewhat of a surprise was the absence of the Beitou branch of the Taipei City Library (台北市立圖書館北投分館), which has been a favorite because of its beautiful setting and wood exterior. It was only ranked 13th in the online poll.

The Association said it will recommend the top 10 to the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions to be added to the list of "1001 Libraries to see before you die."

Lin Chiao-min (林巧敏), secretary general of the association, said only three libraries in northern Taiwan were included in the top 10, seemingly breaking the stereotype that northern Taiwan has more cultural resources than southern Taiwan.

The Kaohsiung public library even collected three places in the top 10 list.

Lin said there were a lot of pearls and dark horses in the results, and she believed it was good to give public exposure to libraries that are less famous but have distinctive features.
