Woah, nice! I almost thought I'd never see that project get off the ground. Nice to see some more movement around there.

More renovations on Dexter Avenue have begun. The corner building on the right will be an Alloz Grill. Not sure about the one next to it.

For real. It's been pretty slow going but I've that this summer will be the opening. At least the first floor retail part is supposed to be. The apartments across the street are nearly finished.

The Yards at Western Rail

New 40-acre music/festival/event venue coming to north downtown at Western Railyard. It will be called the Yards at Western Rail.

"The company behind the elaborate renovation of the Kress building and other Dexter Avenue projects bought the lot full of towering brick-and-steel structures and originally planned to use it as a construction site."

They have began renovating some of the buildings and one will house restrooms and control facilities. A smaller brick building to be used as a ticket booth.

"A towering structure behind the main shed will be enclosed so it can host indoor events ranging from smaller concerts to weddings."

"It’s a place he thinks can bring foot traffic from downtown hotels and, eventually, cause beach-goers to change their plans and get off the interstate to attend events."

Downtown dog park

"The city is planning to open a dog park at the site by early July. That will mean a fenced-in area at the corner of Coosa and Bibb streets next to the City Hall parking deck, with dog water fountains and separate areas for big and small pups. Down the road, they’re planning to add agility equipment and more."

"City officials said the park is meant to help pet owners among the rapidly growing downtown loft communities. There are about 700 apartment units downtown now and more on the way."

"City officials said the park is meant to help pet owners among the rapidly growing downtown loft communities. There are about 700 apartment units downtown now and more on the way."

The Hannah Daye Ridling dog park opened four years ago in east Montgomery’s Blount Park. Strange praised the success of that park and said the city and the Rotarians wanted to give downtown residents a similar place to go.

“This is about making life comfortable for the individuals who don’t want to live out in the suburbs,” he said.

Great idea for the dog park. Having these kinds of amenities is key to bringing them downtown and keeping them there. Birmingham would be smart to figure something like this out closer to all of the new apartments in downtown.

Staybridge Suites

The former skatepark has finally undergone prepping for the new Staybridge Suites at the corner of Bibb and Lee Streets.

This will be a 118 room hotel.

The story from last year.
