IIRC, the one project here in Calgary (mentioned in the article) has an arrangement where the trucks have their sirens off after leaving the building for a certain radius. The trucks have devices on them to control the traffic lights so that helps.

Only the portion on the lower left is the fire station. The main part in the front is a condo building. The affordable housing component is a smaller (attached) building to the rear.

funny timing of this thread as we just learned of this proposal in chicago's river north neighborhood to build a mixed-use tower on a site currently occupied by a fire station that would incorporate a new fire station into the base of the tower.
