Iceland - Reykjavík + part of 1600km in a van

An adventure like very few.

Reykjavik-Vik-West Fjords-Isafjordur-Reykjavik

Welcome to Iceland

Main street

I hear that beer is cheap in this country...

The amount of construction in Reykjavik is unreal Downtown.

Their new concert hall/arts facility.

Incredibly modern condos with ridiculous views to the NE.

Ingenious design detail

Hallgrímskirkja

The main shopping/tourist area.

A stunning square in the middle of Downtown.

Patios orientated towards the sun... rocket science

So how about that bee... $15r!??!?!?!

As luck would have it, they checked my app and placed us across from this. Our home base.

Adorable

I want to be a captain

That's awesome.

Love this apartment

These are awesome.

Am I back in Alberta?

Fresh off the boat.

Live music, Nintendo and happy hour beers under $10

Let that 1600km begin.

Geysir!

Back in Alberta again.

Waterfall #1

Must find somewhere to camp.

Go to bed in an empty, remote parking lot near some running water, wake up to tourists everywhere...many taking photos of 3 Canadians cooking bacon.

Vik - the southern most city of Iceland

Stunning

Go see a plane crash they said.

Just a short walk and well worth it they said.

Time for a dip up in the mountains in a hot...er lukewarm pool.

From Vik we headed north, stopping here and there to camp, eat, enjoy hot pools and save some fellow Canadians from a flat in the middle of absolute nowhere.

A northern vista

Isafjordur - 66.0611° N, - the past 2-3hrs was the most ridiculous drive of my life over multiple ranges/fjords, in the rain/fog on narrow dirt/mud roads in a tall van with multiple hundred feet cliffs and no guards.

Dinner and drinks with the restaurant owner who loved talking about hockey, the Oilers and his national team daughter.

The Van!

Time to head back to Reykjavik, but not before another hot pool in the middle of absolute nowhere.

Crater

Thanks for the tour. I had the pleasure of visiting Iceland in 1990 and it is definitely on my list for a return real soon to see the changes in the last 25+ years. To bad I missed on the year end cheap flight sale out of Edmonton this year

Is it me, or are there more signs in English there than in Icelandic?

A bit of both, but they certainly know the hand that feeds them. Tourism was almost out of control in certain areas... in the off-season.

I don't know if this is still a thing, but in the early 2000s Iceland blitzed the Boston media market with tons of $300-400 flights from Logan to Reykjavik. You could do a hot spa weekend for about $500 a person. It can be less than a 5 hour flight depending on weather. My parents did it 4-5 times and raved more after each trip.

Great pics, the forlorn nature is hauntingly beautiful.

^similar to what they do in many places where they place direct flights. Get you there for a reasonable amount and then expensive food/bev/hotel/day trips.

Brilliant really.

There are less than half a million Icelandic speakers (almost all of whom speak English as well), so of course there are more signs in English.

Great pics! I was about to do a second take when you stated cheap beer near the beginning - but clearly you realized the harsh reality. Getting good beer is even more horrifically expensive.

On the list of cities that punch above their weight, Reykjavik is definitely up there.

Stunning pics !
This crashed plane in the middle of nowhere seems to be a major attraction of Iceland.

Lol. Did you see the guy's signature and posts? He went through entire Russia, almost literally. He knows about this kind of countless places already, maybe better than Icelanders do themselves.

Though I've never been to Iceland (but maybe in the future, why not).

It's just that this crashed plane seems to feature in every TV documentaries about Iceland, as well as in French hip hop video clips shot in Iceland :

Parfaitement inutile.
