Eisenhower memorial

Here's a photo I took of construction of the Eisenhower memorial the other day. The memorial will be located in front of the U.S. Department of Education headquarters, off of Independence Ave, SW.

Georgetown development

Here are a couple of photos I took of development in Georgetown last weekend.

This is the development of the previous Latham hotel. 88 hotel rooms and 30,000 square feet of retail is being built here.

DC United stadium

I took a couple of photos of the new DC United (Audi Field) stadium yesterday in Buzzard Point. I am impressed with how rapidly this is being constructed.

The building in the foreground is a new Pepco substation, which has an impressive piece of public art on the sidewalk on the other side of the building.

Here are some streetscape improvements in Buzzard Point surrounding the new stadium. This area was essential no-man's land for pedestrians as recently as a few months ago.

Tenley

More housing is good for a location that is one block from a metro station and currently has a surface parking lot but the Dancing Crab was a fun dive-bar.

Plans Filed For 41-Unit Project at Dancing Crab Site in Tenleytown

Urban Turf
March 27, 2018

"Last October, the owners of the Dancing Crab, a restaurant that was once a staple in Tenleytown, shared plans with the local ANC for a mixed-use development at the site. On Monday, those plans were officially filed with the city.

The planned-unit development at 4615 Wisconsin Avenue NW (map) and 4611 41st Street NW calls for a seven-story apartment project with approximately 41 residential units and about 5,000 square feet of retail including a rooftop bar/restaurant. The project would have nine parking spaces, two of which would be reserved for car-sharing companies..."

"At 2619-2623 Wisconsin Avenue NW, only a few blocks from the U.S. Naval Observatory, there are plans to create a “continuing care retirement community.” The site currently houses a two-story single-family residential building, known as the infamous “Spy House.” For decades, the FBI used this building to spy on the Russian Embassy.

Now, there are plans for a three-story, 40-foot-high building with nine vehicular parking spaces and 15 bicycle parking spaces to take its place..."

caphillguy-- Welcome to this site! Yes, there is an incredible amount of development now in DC. There is also at least one tower crane just across the Anacostia River in Southeast.

Is there a crane yet at 1400 PA Ave SE? If not, there soon will be. And the safeway site at 1400 E St SE should have a crane soon. I don't know if they've started demo yet I've been out of town the last few weeks.

Development Update: Monroe Street Market; Block E; Brookland

The final phase of the impressive Monroe Street Market development in the Brookland neighborhood is moving forward. Developers Bozzuto, Abdo Development and Pritzker Realty filed plans earlier in January to slightly modify the building that will occupy the development's Block E site at the southwest corner of 7th and Monroe Street, NE. The already approved 6-story building will be mixed-use, comprising 156 residential units and 23,000 SF of retail.

The development team seeks to add a second residential lobby to the building, alter the design and size of the windows and balconies, modify the color palette of the cladding, and reduce the number of parking spaces in the underground garage from 171 to 99, as parking demand in Monroe Street Market's earlier built buildings proved lower than expected.

334 Apartments Overlooking a Woonerf: The Preliminary Plans for Yards West

April 10, 2018

"While construction continues on The Yards, master developer Forest City is already planning the second phase of the 42-acre redevelopment just north of the Anacostia River.

On Monday, Forest City presented preliminary plans for The Yards West, a six-block stretch straddling the future 1 1/2 Street SE between N Street and the riverfront. The development will reestablish the street grid throughout this site — however, the main corridor of Yards West will be far from a typical street and will have a far-from-typical streetscape..."

"Less than 14 months ago, D.C. United held a ceremonial groundbreaking on old surface parking lots in a forgotten wedge of the city. Now, Audi Field is close to becoming a reality.

The 20,000-capacity soccer stadium will open July 14 in the Southwest quadrant of Washington, two diagonal blocks from Nationals Park on a peninsula known as Buzzard Point..."
