Cores generally only become necessary when you are going above 270m.. But below that level it is actually quite rare to see a core. This will be interesting to watch go up though! Might be the tallest

I don't quite follow... I don't see how this building wouldn't have a core. Cores are not only necessary for skyscrapers structurally, but also function as the primary location for emergency stairwells, elevator stacks and mechanical chases.

I think what they mean by "coreless" store, is that the site is big enough to basically have a large podium for Nordstrom and then the tower off to one side, kinda like the 50 Bloor proposal in Toronto (below):

Right, the configuration is not unusual. It's why we have two different designs for the 15 Penn Plaza proposal, one featuring large trading floors that won't be interrupted by the core:

So since it says that Nordstrom will be open at the tower in 2017-2018, does that mean that's when the tower itself will be finished or would it likely be sooner than that, cause that seems too far away, especially if its starting 1st quarter of 2013.

Not really. We're talking four years from excavation to completion. Its a very large tower wirh completion dates similar to the Hudson Yards towers. That's all assuming the tower goes vertical next year, and I don't see why not.

Nordstrom Rack, the off-price division of the Seattle-based department store chain, is said to be in preliminary discussions to dig into about 50,000 square feet — mostly underground — at Blackstone’s 1095 Ave. of the Americas.

A pedestrian plaza running south to West 41st Street lies between that tower and Blackstone’s 120 W. 42nd St., a newly developed glass retail box, with all of the retail connecting underground....
This news follows on the heels of Nordstrom’s announcement that it is finally bringing a full-fledged flagship store to Manhattan. The company has signed a development deal to own 285,000 square feet in the base of Extell’s upcoming tower at 225 W. 57th St.

Anyway I think it is fitting that such a tall building is being built by tall people. Very symbolic I think.

I wonder if it will play into the decision of making this tower the city's tallest, or at least trying to (they're so close, why not). It will supposedly be the tallest Nordstrom, and they are working with Extell on design and architect. Hmmmm.....

wow, id probably be able to walk through their legs without ducking. I'm 5'3" haha. But they definitely joked about that them wanting high ceilings cause they're so freaking tall. And won't it be more dangerous since the buildings so tall yet won't have a core?

The big news in retail was Nordstrom’s decision to take space at Gary Barnett’s development site at 225 West 57th Street. What do you think of it?

Mr. Goldberg: I was just reading about it, actually. I think it’s great—we’ve read these headlines before with Nordstrom but I think it’s great.

Why did they finally settle on this site? For years they had been rumored to be looking at one site after the next. They’ve seemed almost fickle.

I assume it’s a build to suit where they will have input in the design and development. It’s 57th Street and Broadway, which is a good location for them. You have what will be dedicated loading on 58th Street. That is a really important issue for them and it also seems like the floors are big enough so that they can lay out a department store. I don’t think it’s having to do with being fickle—it’s having a large company that’s used to having their stores work a certain way and not being able to readily find that. You have to find the right floorplate that has the right amount of columns and ceiling heights and loading, and you need it to be a location where the customer is.

I hope Nordstrom doesn't sway the design of this tower to become too conservative (i.e. a box). I'd love to see something that is quite interesting to rise on the site.

I'm pretty sure that all that Nordstrom cares above is the layout and interior design of the department store.
