Carl Nolte from the Chron responded:

"I'm checking on it. Crane seems to have been lowered.

Maybe we'll get some info.

Interesting that it shows both the taller One Rincon tower and the Millenium Tower completed but not the second One Rincon tower. It's as if they do think the second tower won't get built for a while.

it shows buildings which are under construction - the second one rincon is not... additional layers show 'approved' buildings or 'proposed' but those were turned off.

I guess you wouldn't be privy to show us those 'approved' or 'proposed' building layers turned on, now would you?

Anyway, does anyone remember any details to this tragic crane collapse accident that happend in San Francisco in 1989? What building was under construction? How long was the project delayed?

If the lowering of the One Rincon Hill tower crane is related to safety concerns, I would happily settle for a delay. Meanwhile, I hope that other work can continue on the project.

SAN FRANCISCO -- A 16-story crane at a highrise construction site snapped apart and plunged to the pavement in San Francisco's financial district on Tuesday, hurling four workers to their deaths and crushing a bus driver during the morning rush hour.

Five people were missing and 20 were injured, three of them critically, in the Tuesday morning disaster, which littered the area around the intersection of California and Kearny streets with crushed vehicles, twisted steel, rubble...

I remember it happening but I don't remember the details such as how long it held up construction. I believe it would have been the building shown here with the "hand" on top which was built about that time:

That's the building with the statues some wags have suggested represent the Board of Supervisors on top (I think Phillip Johnson designed it).

Another crane accident I recall better was when the crane building the "W" Hotel dropped a facade panel from a pretty good altitude.

Gosh--all those workers just standing around and you didn't ask them what's going on?

Quick drive-by on the lower deck this morning (so the view wasn't great) - the crane had been reassembled on its stand, so I'd guess the re-elevation process could begin as soon as this afternoon.

mthd,

Perfect answer!

BTinSF,

According to SSP, 580 California by Johnson/Burgee was completed in 1986. Emporis has the year of completion listed as 1987. That is still about 2 or 3 years before the accident. That's okay, I was only somewhat curious.

SFObserver,

Please continue right on observing. Your photos are fantastic! By the way, there's something about your forum name that I like...

botoxic,

That you spotted the crane "reassembled on its stand," is very encouraging!

580 Cal was completed while I still lived here--but I was in Boston in 1989. So it wasn't that tower.

The crane that collapsed in November 1989 was on the Federal Home Loan Bank Building at 600 California Street--at the northwest corner of California and Kearny. It damaged both the 580 California Johnson/Burgee building to the east and the International Building across the street to the south.

Needless to say, this was a really big deal at the time.

I was in San Francisco for the first time in months yesterday and I came in though the Bay Bridge. I noticed the crane was back up as reported and I must admit, I was relieved to see that. At least now we can get back to business.
