ALMERE, Netherlands

Almere is really unlike any other Dutch city. Whereas most of them have plenty of historic buildings, you won’t find a single building that is older than 35 years in the entire city.
Located on the newly reclaimed land of Flevoland (draining was finished in 1968) the first house was only finished in 1976.
Since then it has been the fastest-growing city of the Netherlands (primarily due to its proximity to Amsterdam 25km/15mi to the west) and is now the 7th largest Dutch city with a population of approx. 195,000.

In recent years the city center has experienced a huge building boom and Almere is now home to some of the most unique buildings in the country.

It is a very modern city! I was there about 20 years ago as a child and it was modern already then, but had no tall highrises.

Was almost going to live here once.It has some sexy buildings and some of the suburbs are cool and similar to Haveneiland. Its really is burb of Amsterdam in a way but the newer parts of the town centre have very unique
buildings.

Some pretty remarkable architecture there. We have suburbs larger than this and no where near as urban looking. Incredible photos, thanks!

I was thinking the very same thing. I'm guessing it functions better than similar satellite cities, but it's just so physically unattractive, to me, and a lot of it already looks dated.

Interesting tour, though.

In what ways is it aging badly? Just the aesthetics of the buildings and landscape? From the pictures it looks like a healthy place socially, lots of people walking around, all the buildings are full of middle-end shops that are open for business, etc. Even though the buildings are ugly there doesn't seem to be too much vandalism.

If anything as time goes on and the place develops a patina of sorts it will feel less "fake".

You know to make some special photos of a very boring city.

Great job.

Indeed MK is an apt comparison.

Great pics R@ptor!

The only thing I have against Almere is that they think they're a city while they're really just a suburb of Amsterdam. And their mayor is kinda stupid...

But the city IS aging well. Very nice architecture and getting more urban by the year. It will never be a regional center like Groningen or Breda which it has surpassed in population though.

Almere: Makes Rotterdam look Ancient.

Seriously though, very cool thread. While definitely not perfect, Almere shows some great examples of how other cities can build walkable, pedestrian friendly realms in the 21st century.
