Quick City Overview: London

London has a bit of everything for everyone. A mix of every culture you can imagine. Old and modern architecture, dozens of huge railway stations, a very complex subway network, castles, palaces of many historical eras, fascinating museums and many icons of the Humanity of the last two centuries, such as the Palace of Westminster, the Big Ben, the Tower Bridge or the Abbey Road. Like most of the biggest cities, London managed to get an identity away from England itself, being almost a small country with and advanced culture and one of the leading cities in the world. Accompanied by the cloudy rainy british weather, what we see of London today is the result, mostly, of the changes that took place on the last three centuries with the industrial revolutions, with what once was the new future of urbanism and architecture consisting on brick-fractories, train networks on elevated structures, lots of bridges, a huge amount of boat traffic at the Thames River and the railway stations as neuralgic centers. Nowadays, the city keeps the style and capital-atmosphere that always had, with the addition of some of the tallest skyscrapers of Europe.

The greatest city in the world!

1. London
2. Paris
3. New York

………………………………………………………. the others just don't compare, though SF, Boston, and DC are pretty great too!

Tower of London

Placed on the limits of the financial district, the Tower of London was built one millenium ago, mainly used as a prison during almost all of its existence. The original main tower (the "White Tower") was later expanded several times with new sets of walls and buildings for other purposes, converting it into the current complex. Even after being seriously damaged after the Second World War, it still keeps a collection of the Crown Jewels, with the Imperial State Crown as its most relevant piece. The castle is also famous for the legend of the beheading of Ana Boleyn by the former King Henry VIII.

Tower Bridge

At the second half of the 19th Century, a new bridge was about to be built in London in order to connect the two sides of the Thames River. It was required for the bridge to have enough space in the middle to allow the passage of the commercial ships, while at the same time the overall architectural design should be made on gothic style. The winning project was slighty different to the one we see nowadays, who changed while it was being constructed to have a more direct dialogue with the Tower of London, placed just in front. The Tower Bridge opens its bascule part very often, with almost a thousand times every year.

Has it snowed there in the last month? I was just there for the first time a month ago. The weather was surprisingly warm.

What an amazing city to just browse anything. Loved it.

Yes, I was there 2 months ago and it was really hot aswell. The shots, however, were taken in march, during the so-called "Beast from the East".

Palace of Westminster (Parliament)

Probably the main iconic image of England, the Palace of Westminster (Parliament) is one of the most beautiful examples of neo-gothic architecture in the world. It's a very interesting building to look at. Many different designed towers rise from the large massive rectangle body. Of course that the famous one is the Big Ben, who paradoxically exceeds the palace itself. However, the Victoria Tower is equally important, as it was the tallest tower in the world on its time who didn't belong to a religious institution. The main room of the Palace is the Westminster Hall, who could be saved during the german bombings in the WWII but other ones are also very richly designed, such as the Chamber of the House of Lords, the Member's Lobby or the Queen's Robing Room.
