It may surprise you, but most New Yorkers rarely visit the tourist attractions, though that doesn't mean they are exclusively visited by tourists. I know it's the "cool" thing to say "I'm from New York, and I've never visited X,Y,Z.." But the truth is, New Yorkers will grab their phones and snatch shots of whatever, be it a tourist attraction, or some ordinary, typical New York thing. And this will be something no one in New York has experienced yet (obviously). It won't cost anything (a huge factor). And it will be open year round. It will eventually become something New Yorkers can't imagine the city without, like the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State, or the Brooklyn Bridge - whether or not they ever intend to visit. That's one of the things that make New York so special. You have these collection of "things" people come from around the world to see, and you have the option to visit them at anytime, or not.

They should plan scheduled light shows here at night.

I wonder if it will get a nickname like the "bean" in Chicago.

There's supposed to be a contest for an official name.

The 150-foot-tall Vessel will be comprised of 154 interconnecting flights of stairs, 2,500 individual steps, and 80 landings — providing a “one-mile vertical climbing experience.” It is expected to top out by the end of the year, and open to the public in the fall of 2018.

...In a bid to ensure the towering centerpiece has a moniker that rivals its Parisian counterpart, Ross noted that Related will be launching an online competition where New Yorkers can vote on an official name.

Clearly it's called the Honeycomb or bees nest. Also what bizarre location to build that. Climb up this tower so you can get a view of pretty much nothing.

You have absolutely NO idea what you're talking about. The interactivity of Vessel, being able to gain so many different perspectives, explore and experience in so many different ways... that's it's biggest charm. Plus yes, the view from the top deck will be an exceptional one...not one of "pretty much nothing".

I'm sure it's already been posted, but when does Vessel open to the public?

I bet austin242 is giddy if he ever visits New York and starts walking up the Vessel to check out the awesome views. lol

Those 80 landings will give a total of 160 different views ... one looking out and one looking in ...

Was supposed to open towards the end of next year, along with everything else. But Related has pushed back openings because they want everything to open at the same time
(the mall, the office buildings, etc.). They are now talking about early 2019. There's a chance that the plaza could open before then, but we'll have to see.

Meanwhile, there's never just "nothing" in New York. That huge plaza will be activated with people and events. There will be views around and up the new Hudson Blvd and Park,
a new canyon of skyscrapers and open space. But as pointed out, the main view (and attraction) will be in and through the Vessel itself.
