If the Bayers Lake location is part of the work to demolish the Centennial Building and VG Campus, which is how it's been described by the government, then it might be reasonable to expect that clinics are moving FROM the VG/Centennial TO the industrial park. Otherwise, they're just bloating the system.

If this is explicitly the case, then this is explicitly a disaster. The VG has to go - no question, but the right solution should have been to double the size of the Infirmary by building on the old high school site next door.

If the intent were to duplicate the Cobequid Centre for the mainland south of the city, that would be understandable. This would allow residents of this part of the city to access routine outpatient services without having to venture onto the peninsula. Surely though they could have found someplace better to put it.......

This is really a bad place to put an outpatients facilty. No transit, huge traffic congestion and its in an industrail park. It should be put on the old QEII high school site next to the Camp Hill Hospital.

No, that's an urban farm. Can't touch that.

The urban farm was always meant as temporary until the hospital needed the land for expansion. The people who run the farm stated they were ok with this at the time but I'm pretty sure they simply figure they can fight it when the time comes :/.

Why not relocate the urban farm to the center of the skating oval. That piece of land could do double duty couldn't it? I think even Keith would approve......

According to one of Colin's previous posts, that is the long-term plan.

Regardless, the people have spoken through their votes and have decided that McNeil's vision is the one that they are buying...

It would finally serve some useful function for more than a few days a year.

The QEII redevelopment plan has always included two outpatient facilities: a "community" centre to be located away from the hospital setting; a second "specialized" facility at the Infirmary site. (This would be to accommodate those specialties that require ready access to to surgical and critical care supports.)

This is from the press release from the original announcement in April 2016:

Some of the changes will include:

-- construction of a new space for a specialized outpatient centre that must remain close, or even connected, to the existing Halifax Infirmary building
-- development of a community outpatient centre for services that do not need to be delivered in a hospital setting
According to the timeline found on the project website, planning for the Infirmary project began last fall. A location has not been announced but the former QEHS site and the CBC Bell Road site are likely at the top of the list.

The choice of Bayers Lake is flawed on a number of levels but the expectation was always that the community outpatient facility would be sited to be easily accessed by people travelling from outside metro.

This would be a fine arrangement, so long as outpatient services that do not require closeness to the Infirmary not be exclusively located in Bayer's Lake.

It's unfair to expect an elderly or mobility challenged patient purposefully living close to central health care to travel (with poor transit connections) far away to a congested industrial park just for certain services. Certainly no more fair than it is to expect patients from outside metro to travel in to the centre of town.

The transit connections are poor, yes, but the street network is also congested and expected to become even moreso, I think.

The province today announced it's acquiring the CBC-TV building on Bell Road to support the QEII Infirmary site expansion. The price tag is $4.5 million, which seems reasonable to me. The parcel includes 0.8 hectares and the existing parking lot. Added to the former Queen Elizabeth High School site, it gives the NSHA a lot of flexibility as it moves forward with the QEII redevelopment.

The CBC announcement was a long time coming: it's been rumoured since the redevelopment was announced in April last year. It's a likely site for the new central outpatients facility that was included in the plan. (That's in addition to the community outpatient facility planned for Bayers Lake.)

Apparently This Hour Has 22 Minutes, which is still produced in the Bell Road building, will have until next July to move out.

The addition portion of the $145m + renovations at Dartmouth General. I think it's scheduled to open in the fall.
