Thanks everyone, really appreciate the comments.

I didn't realize that you were showing pictures from a trip around the world. What places have you put pictures up of so far?
Check my signature, there are just two other tours so far, a lot more to come when I get the time.

I assume this http://www.flickr.com/photos/pyates/5395128021/ is a Baobab tree?
Yeah, that's a Baobab tree. There were a few in that village and all of them appeared to serve as common areas where people would gather and hang out.

What kind of camera gear are hauling around the globe with you? I'm assuming you would want to travel as lightly as possible.
I started light, with only two lenses but picked up two more by the end of my trip. I use a 7D with various Canon lenses. My brother-in-law lent me his 70-200 2.8 for my travels which, while heavy, was certainly worth lugging around. Unfortunately, I had to give it back when I got home.

There are no words to describe the quality of this thread. I have only one thing to say:

Easily the most beautiful pictures I've ever seen on this site. Thank you.

i was planning a trip to mali recently and my fiend bailed on me....can you tell me how you travelled there?....were you an independent backpacker or did you join a tour?....what was your feeling of safety compared to other third world countries?

i am really interested to know how you did it....would you recommend going alone?...when were you there?

pm me if you dont want to give too many details.....amazing photos...thanks so much for sharing them.

Absolutely superb. Fantastic photos are good enough (or better) for the National Geographic.

Bar none, easily one of the best threads and series on this site, ever. I'll gladly take this over photothreads of the same old, pedestrian-starved and suburban-oriented American cities any day.

what an amazing thread -- beautiful colors and such alien landscapes!

tim freakin buk tu, wow so that's what it looks like, eh? doesn't get any further out there than that does it?

btw it turns out i do know a bit about the place after all via mali's rich music history -- if you are into world music at all mali is an addictive place to start. super rail band and les ambassadeurs were great 60's era pop music pioneers and mali music just gets groovier from there!!
