In some ways I'm more upset about losing the Waldorf tower than anything else. If Waterview is developed into the design we've seen, it'll be even better than the original design.

As for the Chicago Spire - eh. I would prefer something like the Skyneedle for a 2000 footer in Chicago.

I don't know what rock you've been living under for the past several years but there was a Great Recession and some buildings got cancelled as a result. GET OVER IT!!!

New Activity

For the last few weeks, there have been workers onsite putting fresh plywood on the face of the sidewalk scaffolds. This is usually where they hang the pretty signs that advertise what is to be built at the site. Is it possible we are soon going to see some pretty pictures displayed at the site about what is to come?

^ I believe it when they finish pretty signs, but also repair the rusty steel girts that were supposed to hold up shiny glass.

I really hope they don't build the design we saw, it looked terrible, much worse than the original waterview.

I agree. The original Waterview base with a completely different top looked odd to me. It might be a great conversation piece which could make me change my mind down the road. I wish they'd just finish the original Waterview design.

This is probably going to be a huge home run for Related. Not only are they going to make gobs on money on this, but they will score a publicity coup by turning around such a high profile failed development.

^^^ Everything I've heard has indicated that they CAN'T make it work unless they use that general massing (including the cantilever). Basically they have to reorient the load bearing columns in order to make bigger floor plans to maximize the income without incurring the extreme costs of completing the skinny tower as is. This means the cantilever is cheaper than building it as originally designed.

I first hear this a long time ago when the property still hadn't sold and everything I've heard since then (including the renders that were released) has indicated that they must build it that way if they want it to be profitable.

Thanks nowhereman. If this one turns out half as cool as this rendering, I will be beyond ecstatic!

^^^ I'm still not sure about the renderings we saw. It looks like two completely separate buildings that have nothing to do with each other. If they are able to make the bottom look less postmodern and more miesian it may look a little better. A monolithic box at the bottom, a one of a kind cantilever and then this sort of disjointed series of simple boxes would look excellent. Even if the curve needs to be kept (which I imagine it will), the windows should be simple curtain wall glass like the upper part.

Even if I end up unhappy with the design, I'll be happy just to see work continue on this.

Hey J_M_Tungsten did you get a height on that? it looks taller than the United Building so probably in the 670-700 foot range...

More importantly, where did you find that render?

^^^ That's probably a good estimate of height.

Woah, where'd that rendering come from? Looks even more epic from that angle.

PS, that' looks like it might be fritted glass on the bottom portion.

This is the page I got it from: http://www.cgarchitect.com/2012/02/j...go-residential , but I just now read that page. It doesn't sound promising for this design, but someone has to know something out there regarding this, right?

"I did the CG on this project in late 2011. I can finally share it, as the office I was working for at the time, DeStefano Partners, is no longer around. So, no, this project will not be moving forward--at least not looking like this. This 111 West Wacker project has a lot of news and hubub circling it, but your guess is as good as mine as to what will be built there in the hopefully near future. Regardless of what the ultimate and final design is, it will be better than the shell of concrete that rests there now. The site has been an eye sore on Chicago's river for nearly four years. Enjoy! Below are some additional renderings for the project."

^^^ this design is really great, I just realized that these protruding boxes are a perfect resolution to the problem faced by architects nowadays in that all developers want to supply balconies.
