That probably explains why you are not an architect.

Agreed the tower is meh (there was a design floating around in 2021 that was simpler and more graceful). But the saving grace is that the street level seems good, with some nice-looking finishings and a pretty active feel along the new thoroughfare being created. I’m optimistic about the “square” as well, having peeked in on it in person.

I've tried to figure this out as I've noticed this from many locations which I am surprised to see it from.

In the summer of 2022, the top of the structure (at current height at that time) and crane were visible on the water at Chebucto Head (17.5 km)

Some spots I've seen it on and confirmed with Google Street View:

514 Ketch Harbour Road (14.2 km)

Crest on Main Street Dartmouth (8 km)

103 approaching Bayers Lake (~7.5 km)

Not sure I'm into a vertical disco experience with colour changing LEDs... but to each their own!

Ultimately, I think the success of this design will come down to the experience of people with this building/development at grade.

Lol. Nothing that frenetic. Just the ability to wash it in different shades depending on the occasion. Like the CN Tower.

Although maybe they could project a giant clock face on it, or an AccuWeather icon

I can't see how the white cube thing could just stay like that. Surely it must just be an incomplete phase of construction? If not that's crazy.

It’s actually on these renderings, but it’s black. So maybe it has yet to be finished and fully clad? Though it’s still got sore-thumb vibes in black.

Definitely looks a lot better in black.

Making that huge cube thing black instead of white will tend to visually subdue it, but it will still be there... hopefully not so noticeable from the street.

I'm all for some kind of light feature - instead of trying to hide it, maybe it might be better to dress it up a little. Maybe put one of those huge 1980s vibe digital clocks on it like the Skye project - make huge retro digital clocks a Halifax trademark! We can make them cool again!

We're not Toronto... LOL nah, I like the idea. Slow to transition LEDs would be cool. Especially with the viewpoints that can see it. Will give the kids something to stare at.

Housing Accelerator Fund proposed changes for the remaining building site;

Note the original request was to allow a 12-storey building. The site is being rezoned to CEN-2 with FAR of 7.5.

Quote:
• This request is to allow a change to built-form requirements.
• The current built form requirements were developed over many years of research and consultation with industry with the intent to provide as-right development path
while providing for a pedestrian friendly environment.
• Staff are not recommending site-exemptions to built-form requirements at this time
• The HAF proposes to increase tall-midrise typology from 9 storeys to 10 storeys

There is signage up for North End Cafe at the corner of King and St Alban's. The building there looks to be ready for occupancy next month.

There was a fire at the site this morning. Looked like it was coming from the roof of the new tower going up.

Ya, I could see the flames all the way from Dartmouth. Looked like it was the building just west of Good Robot. Hope everyone working on the site is okay...

I held my cell phone up to my spotting scope and took a few fairly poor pics. The entire event lasted approximately 30 minutes. I remember seeing a very similar sight when Gladstone Ridge was being built. What can't be seen in these pics is the crane operator who left their cab and was very near to the weight at the end of the boom.

Hot tar roofing got too hot. Looked to be a gas leak at the burner.
