If it is 1.6 km then that's twice the height of Burj Dubai, and that's just absolutely nuts.

What is the approval process like in Saudi Aradia, does the tower need to find some tenants first before breaking ground? or do they jump straight to construction and pray half the tower doesn't sit half empty afterwards?

Jeddah needs one million housing units

+ saudi population will double in 10 years, today 60% of the population are under 18

indeed i hawe seen the Burj Khalifah and its very hard to realise just how tall that it is when you are standing right by it.

will be really intresting to see if they actually go ahead with 1,6 kilometre height thats an insane push up from Burj Khalifah.

and if they do it may remain the worlds largest for a very long time, as it is today only the richest Arab states and maybe china can pull off such insanely tall towers i guess.

seeing this in maybe 10-15 years topped out at 1.6 kilometre would be wacko

and as for the approval process in Saudi arabia i guess it is like Dubai what the King and Royals say is the law so, when they figure out just how to do it they will probably do it.

and Saudi Arabia hawe been stacking up oil money for 50 Years now and hawent diversified their economy at all really so they are in need of pulling of an even bigger boom than Dubai i guess both in Tourism and Trade/Industry.

and this certantly is a very big tourism and attention booster even if it dont fill up right away

Hajj is tourism by its self, imagine 4 million people coming to your country and leave after 3 weeks.

An extremely expensive and impractical approach to housing.

Ever played SimTower?

seems like Gulf Arabia has access to the site yes.

he has put up some nice pictures if it earlier and it seems like he dident credit anyone so they are most likely taken by him.

as for the height i think we will get to know some more spesific numbers soon that are close to reality.

But they may also choose to do it in much more unofficial and let the rumours go until they are close to completion tho that is hard on such a big project.

and very few countries/cities hawe the money and drive to overtake 823-1000+ pluss buildings anyway

you do realize that building a 3000+ foot building is not the most efficient method to house lots of people, right?

It's a vanity structure.

These are from May of this year. Altin did say it was a 3 lobed design that was chosen ...

Could it be the KT design ?

Draw your own conclusion ...

I could certainly live with this if it turns out to be the KT design.
Discussion ... thoughts ...?

That is also apparently Adrian Smith holding the model there.

It looks like an acceptable design.

You'd think such a tall skinny tower would be mostly elevator shafts, emergency stairwells, utilities, etc.

the date in the pics (18 5 2010) is kinda along time ago, i'm sure the design is now much better and more detailed, can't wait for the official renders
