If they choose La Brea for Crenshaw North, it certainly won't.

That was what I meant by in the short term, when the Purple Line Extension opens.

I'm hoping you'll right a piece about this on Urbanize when more details come out?

I suppose if you did the Barrington Station with .9 mile stop spacing, you'd have stops at Barrington, Centinela, 2oth, Lincoln, and DTSM, and that is decent.

The original stops for the Purple Line extension was Bundy, 26th, 14th, and 4th. I would imagine if the line was ever completed this stops would remain the sane. Sinilarly, I expect the Crenshaw Line northern extension to follow the original stops for the cancelled Pink Line, which were Beverly Center / Ceder Sainai, Santa Monica and San Vicente, Santa Monica and Fairfax, and Santa Monica and La Brea.

Benefit of the former is being able to use existing environmental documents. Not the case for the latter. Also, dear god, don't let them ruin the Crenshaw Line like that.

I would love to, but I'm on a writing hiatus while I get up to speed at my new job! I'll definitely be tweeting about it and maybe put something on my personal blog?

Interesting to note, and this very well mean nothing, but the renderings of the 405 train line show a rail car using a third rail i.e. not light rail. Like I said, this could mean nothing, but the rail cars depicted are also not those of the current HRT trains. I've always thought the 405 Line could potentially use automated light rail like Vancouver, or Copenhagen, and these renderings could point to that theory being reality.

If the line is entirely grade separated, no reason to not at least study automated operations. Green line probably would be automated if not for the RTD/Metro merger.

Would make sense with planned private sector operations too.

Subway Planning Needs to Address the Dreadful Walking Experience Around Stations
Los Angeles Magazine | October 3, 2017 | Neal Broverman | Transportation
Quote:
Getting to the Grove and Beverly Center from the new Purple Line stops should be a pleasant walk, not a perilous scramble.
Quote:
Metro and the cities of Los Angeles and Beverly Hills can learn a few lessons from the Expo Line, which opened to Culver City in 2012 and Santa Monica four years later. Metro and the city of L.A. did almost nothing to increase walkability around its stations, especially since nearly all the light rail stops bump up against massive, multi-lane boulevards. The transit agency and the city have yet to add curb extensions to shorten pedestrian crossings or even give longer walk signals to cross the wide streets; heck, the Sepulveda station only got a west-facing sidewalk a few weeks before the extension opened.

Santa Monica, on the other hand, planned years in advance for the train. Right around the time of the extension’s opening, a huge pedestrian esplanade opened at Fourth and Colorado; the city also added scramble crosswalks to separate cars from people. Helpful street signs indicate the walking distance/time to destinations like the pier and 3rd Street Promenade. The Breeze bike share is easily accessible from all of Santa Monica’s train stations. That’s certainly not the case with L.A.’s stations.

The Purple Line’s Fairfax and La Cienega stations will need the most help, since many riders will attempt the half-mile walk to destinations like the Grove, Farmer’s Market, Beverly Center, and Cedars-Sinai. A walk to any of these places from the subway should take between 10 and 15 minutes; shorter than hailing a Lyft and sitting in traffic. But will the walking experience be like? If it’s unpleasant, will people say, “Screw it, I’m driving next time”?

The rendering comes from a Metro presentation from over 4 years ago:
http://media.metro.net/projects_stud...esentation.pdf

Not sure there is much inside information to be found in such a rendering, especially since they have abandoned the idea of car lanes in the tunnel and the comments regarding the RFPs specifically said that they are only doing the transit portion.

Metrolink unveils first of 40 clean diesel locomotives in Southern California

This is excellent news.

Metrolink unveils first of 40 clean diesel locomotives in Southern California

By STEVE SCAUZILLO
Orange County Register
Oct. 5, 2017

"Metrolink unveiled its first-ever clean diesel locomotive on Thursday that officials said will emit far fewer smog-forming gases and is more powerful than its current trains.

The new F125 locomotive, built by Caterpillar, Inc., will begin taking passengers later this month, making the Southern California commuter rail service the first transit agency in the nation running the state-of-the-art train, said Sherita Coffelt, Metrolink spokewoman.

By next year, Metrolink will have placed 40 new locomotives in service, nearly replacing its entire fleet of 55. When all 40 are running, it will mean the equivalent of removing the annual emissions of 31,320 vehicles on roadways, Metrolink estimated...."

Alternative H will surely see more ridership. But the question is how much cost does it add? Either way, this will be another super low ridership political suburban extension of the Metro system.

Does anyone at the Orange County Register know the difference between a Hyundai-Rotem cab car and a Caterpillar F-125 locomotive? Three photos included in the news story, but not one of the locomotive the story is about?
What a disappointment.
