It is quite a run down area because of the wall, which does need a lot of work done in the area which is good!

However, the area around the wall will be kept as a memorial so not much construction there!

As far as I can remember Nordbahnhof is sitting on its own in a sort of no-mans land area!

I also walked up Acker strasse, the area is basically low cost housing, there was a former AEG factory building at the top of the street, the areas look quite grim but I had a beer in a bar up there, seemed dedicated to German football!

Vote fails to save Berlin airport

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7370248.stm

Berliners have failed to back attempts to keep open the city's historic Tempelhof airport, according to early referendum results.

Just over 21% of Berlin's 2.4m voters opposed plans to close the airport, but 25% were needed for the non-binding vote to be considered valid.

The airport's backers had hoped a strong vote would persuade city leaders to change their minds.

The airport played a crucial role in the Berlin Airlift during the Cold War.

The airport, one of the world's biggest buildings, was built in 1923

Of those who voted, 60% were opposed to the closure while 40% supported it, but only 36% of the city's electorate turned out, leaving the no vote below the necessary threshold.

And Berlin's mayor had in any case said he would push ahead with the closure regardless of the result.

The BBC's Tristana Moore in Berlin says the results are a blow to members of the Save Tempelhof group, who had organised a slick advertising campaign over the past few weeks.

The airport has been threatened with closure for more than a decade.

The authorities want to close it in October to make way for a new international airport on the outskirts of the city, arguing that it has been running up heavy losses and is no longer viable.

But, our correspondent says, campaigners claim Tempelhof is the ideal inner-city airport, catering for business travellers and short-haul flights within Europe, as well as saying it is a symbol of the city's history.

Tempelhof is Germany's oldest commercial airport - and is claimed to be the world's third largest building, behind the Pentagon in the US, and Ceausescu's palace in Bucharest.

During the Cold War, from June 1948, Allied aircraft landed at Tempelhof, delivering thousands of tonnes of food and supplies to the residents of West Berlin, which had been cut off by the Soviet Union.

The crisis started on 24 June 1948, when Soviet forces in the eastern zone blocked Allied rail and road access to the western sectors of Berlin.

The Berlin Airlift was one of the biggest humanitarian air relief missions in history.

I have mixed feelings reading that article.
One one hand the entire area should be conserved on the other it is a very remarkable airport that still can be useful.

At least the building is safe that is the most important factor.

I'm quite dissapointed about this airports closure. The last time I went to Schoenefeld, it took 45minutes on the train to reach it.

I guess Berlin will pay the price when it grows and becomes a larger business center. Berliners will fly to London on Business, land at the handy and small London City Airport and then just dream that they could do the same at Tempelhof on their way back.

It maybe safe, but will it really be open to the public, and if so, will they still keep the vast open halls?

I agree on Tempelhof, it should be kept as a small airport, all major cities have at least two to three airports and it doesn't look good putting all your eggs in one basket!

Hmm I have no clue really. But I think that 2010 / 2011 / 2012 sounds realistic since the building is a little more complex with that shopping mall inside and stuff.

But I will take pictures today of Leipziger Platz when I am in Berlin.
I can post them later on today then.

O² World Arena:

Thank God they're finally finishing Leipziger Straße. The vast emptiness was just depressing.

Look at that , the entire website got refreshed.
It may sound strange but this project is one of the best things that can happen for the city.
I still believe the high-rises on the Alexanderplatz will never be built so the long stretch along the river Spree is a fabulous opportunity for new style development and the location works as a perfect combination to connect the former east-city centre and the beginning of the green suburbs in Stralau.
All together with the S-bahn network nearby and cut buy numerous other öpnv-lines.

This is a nice looking building. Looks some what like the shaw center here in Baton Rouge. I take it this is proposed?
