Two more for Edmonton, both quite disturbing. A 20 month old boy found murdered and dumped outside a north side church and the father is in custody, and a man died of his injuries after a home invasion on the west end, so we're now at 16

Police also note a significant spike in domestic violence in the city. This could be the worst year yet since I moved here in '04

Kitchener may have had its first of the year. The death of a 22 year old woman on Friday has been deemed "suspicious" and the police are looking for a named 24 year old male, who has reportedly been sighted by police near Erie, Pennsylvania, where he was seen putting a stolen Pennsylvania licence plate on his car.

Confirmed - the woman died of multiple stab wounds. Police have laid a charge of second-degree murder.

16 would put the city of Edmonton's current homicide rate at just over 1.7 per 100,000 - 4 in the city of Calgary so far in 2017 works out to just under 0.33 per 100,000. That is quite a starting difference. The city of Vancouver sits at 7 for just over 1.1 per 100,000 - I think the city of Calgary numbers are quite low so far for 2017.

Edit: Oops, Calgary just had its fifth homicide overnight for a rate of just over 0.4

Windsor is now at 3 for the year already with this latest homicide, unusually high!

Might have a second one this weekend, it's still under investigation.

Hamilton just had numbers 3 and 4:

Hayder Qasim-Rushdi died in hospital on the weekend after pulling into a gas station bleeding from a stab wound to the neck on Friday.

Angelo Musitano, younger son of infamous local mobster Dominic Musitano, and linked along with his brother Pat to the hits on rival boss Johnny "Pops" Papalia and his lieutenant 20 years ago, was gunned down outside his suburban Waterdown home yesterday afternoon.

I thought the mafia stuff had died down in recent years, overtaken by bikers and Asian and Eastern European gangs.

Angelo Musitano has dodge a bullet a few times in the last couple of years. I believe just last year someone set his car on fire in his driveway. So someone was definitely was out to get him.

That was Pat's, according to the Clairmont and Fragomeni story:
"The last time a Musitano made headlines was in September 2015 when Pat's SUV was torched in his own driveway on St. Clair Boulevard."

It also includes a "source" noting that "Pat is likely very concerned about his own safety." (um ya, do ya think?)

The traditional mob stuff does seem to have gone quiet over the past decade+ while biker crime stories became the norm. I'd make more speculation that there's still business happening but don't want my family to receive a fish wrapped in newspaper.

Nah, we have a lot of thug life wanna be's and a large transient worker population with a lean towards self destructive behaviour and there are general groups ill equipped to deal with the economic downturn.
It all adds up to a higher rate of violent behavior.
That said, if you don't run in those circles i doubt you'd ever notice it day to day.

Pretty fucked up situation with this one.. mother charged with 2nd degree murder after 11 day old baby dies in Edmonton from a lethal dose of meth, brings the homocide total to 18

We're seeing some really disturbing trends here in Edmonton right now

It is hard to imagine that this is not connected to breast-feeding, but the media report says "no". Heartbreaking. Depraved if proven.

Is this the first for Kitchener or all of KWC?
