Seeing these photos of Lowell makes me want to take a trip back to New England to visit the old mill cities. I used to live in Manchester, NH, one of the largest of the mill cities, and I always thought those old buildings had tons of potential! Not to mention, the cities tend to be very urban, very dense, and have great architecture to boot!

Lots of potential for renovation here! The brickwork and decorative features are a visual treat. It seems like urban renewal hasn't touched this place like Detroit where I live. They seem prime for renovation with first floor retail. Hope the next recovery brings positive changes there...

I agree with you. Lowell,MA is simply a dream job for the urban renovation professionals. Lowell has a lot of potential....renovate the once magnificent buildings and convert them to affordable apartments/condos and business offices.

Nice pics Thundertubs. I was Born And raised In Lowell and can tell you that contrary to what you heard, the Acre is not and never was the worst neighborhood in Lowell. There were far worse, but they were old bad to outsiders. Most of the people who grew up there have fond memories. This song I wrote about growing up in Lowell sums it up for most of us.

I also take a lot of Photos of Lowell. I walk around there weekly. Here's a link to a few Then & Now photos I've put together. The Then photos were taken in the 70's by a photographer photo documenting the city after it was declared a historic park. The Now photos were taken by me.

Never heard of Lowell, MA, very nice job capturing the town. Very Blue collar.
