You might be right.

I can see it now - a manager, an assistant manager, a secretary and a warehouseman.

I sure hope the property taxes are worth that eye sore, 4 employees and had to change a town bylaw to get it...doesn't make sense.

It'll look better once the skin (cladding) is applied, but there is no question it will stick out on the Sackville skyline as you are driving by on the TCH.

Personally, I don't think the building will be that visible from most of the town though, especially once the trees are in leaf.

This building under construction in Sackville is apparently going to be quite a success.

New downtown Sackville seniors complex drawing interest

current status

Quote:
Three-quarters of the (35) units are already spoken for, with signed leases, says Lafford, and he is continuing to receive inquiries on a regular basis.

“There’s no question there’s a demand there,” says Lafford, of the desire for new and roomy barrier-free units for an aging population that promote safety and independence.

Ranging in size from 960 to 1,300 square-feet, and priced at between $1,250 to $1,700 per month, the apartments will feature plenty of open space, including a living room area and kitchen, the bedroom(s), and two full baths (with the master bathroom including an accessible walk-in shower). The proposed design of the complex also calls for balconies on each unit, a shared fitness centre and recreation room, and underground parking.
Quote:
Some of the new units within the new v-shaped structure will also overlook the Mount Allison swan pond and the Waterfowl Park.

Lafford says while the majority of seniors who have signed leases are those already living in the area, there are also several from Ontario or out west with Maritime roots who will be returning. He says he’s pleased to see this development is a factor in drawing people back here and feels it’s a building that it is going to serve its particular market well.

from the Sackville Tribune Post:

Land for Lorne Street project totals $373,000
Sackville acquires 18 properties for flood control efforts

Ducks Unlimited is proposing to build a pond that will help restore the wetlands in the Lorne Street and St. James Street area of town. Lorne Street is to the left of the pond in this image and St. James Street is at the bottom and the large building at the top of the map is Marshlands Inn.

Quote:
The current plan, which was recently approved by council, calls for construction of only one retention pond on St. James, which will connect to existing ditching systems along Lorne Street and towards Crescent Street and use a provincially-owned aboiteau to release the water into the Tantramar River.
Quote:
Several of the properties recently purchased, north of St. James Street and east of Lorne behind Marshlands Inn, will in fact be used for a new pond that will be built by Ducks Unlimited this spring and have some storage capacity (about 8,600 cubic metres) during severe storms.

The DU pond was first brought as a proposal to the town in the fall of 2017 when the flood control project was being discussed, said town engineer Dwayne Acton.

The six-acre pond will serve as an addition to the nearby Sackville Waterfowl Park and would feature a walking trail and interpretive signage.

“Essentially, it would be an extension of our waterfowl park, very similar to what you’d see if you’re out walking on our existing waterfowl park,” he said.
Having a new restored wetland in behind the Marshland Inn should be good business for the inn. They could put in their own waterfowl viewing platform!

Here's another image showing a rendering of the restored wetland, walking trails and parking.

The two images are rotated 90 degrees with relation to each other.

I see the design has changed yet again from the most recent render - it has a pitched roof.......

The south face is already clad - it's bland white paneling of some form.

This thing will have little architectural merit (but will be a wonder of automation). You can see this building for miles around. From the east, it is visible on the TCH bypass around Amherst as it descends towards the marsh. That's gotta be at least 10 km or so........

It's bloody massive, was out there on the weekend and was out on the Marsh too, you can see it from everywhere. It's bloody ugly on the skyline, it's higher than everything.

I just measured the distance on Google Earth.

From the east this facility can be seen driving westbound on the TCH around Amherst at a distance of 12 km.

From the west, the facility can be seen roughly from just before the Walker Road interchange on the TCH, a distance of about 10 km.

They need to hire the Avenir lighting crew and make it beautiful with color. .. rent it out as a giant billboard...or make it the worlds biggest drive in screen.

Update on the downtown seniors apartment building under construction near the Swan Pond.

I like the colours and the materials they are using - this gives the building almost a modern Tudor type of appearance........

They've also done an excellent job of saving the adjacent mature trees.

Sackville has decided to not go ahead with the new installation of a decomissioned military vehicle to its memorial park after concerns by some residents and a debate by council.

I used to work for Veterans Affairs, went to MtA, and have family from there. If anyone would like me to explain what is generally considered appropriate as far as commemoration is concerned or what the park is like, I'm happy to do that. I'm not going to get into a debate about it, though.

In my experience, other communities might be quick to ask for or accept the vehicle if offered. It's pretty much a low-cost, ready-made memorial. Some communities still can't afford to transport the vehicle onto their site or set it up, though.

AFAIK, the town has not refused the Cougar armoured personnel carrier, rather they have delayed installation until a town meeting is called to discuss the issue in detail.

I personally find this highly regrettable. It is a leap of logic to think that an armoured vehicle on a pedestal is a glorification of war. It is merely a commemoration of the effort and sacrifice of those veterans who went to war and served their country at great imminent peril.

Sackville, by it's very nature has a high concentration of SJW types in the towns population, due to the fact that MTA is located there. Mount Allison is the personification of a small liberal arts university, with no professional faculties and only modest science programs. The university therefore is overrun with students in sociology, political science and women's studies. This is a fertile breeding ground for (often misplaced) protest movements to develop and get nurtured.

Outside the university, I get the impression the rest of the town is pretty conservative. This should make for a very interesting town hall meeting..........
