Shitty.

A couple of neighbourhoods just on the edge of the old Central Slum. These areas were bulldozed too but they actually weren't any worse than where I live now. From Vintage St. John's.

Venice Pizzeria, then and now.

And one of the pictures included in a new book coming out. Townies just means people from St. John's. We have no municipal terms here except Townie for St. John's and Bayman for anywhere else. And you add "ie" to all of the neighbourhoods of St. John's to get the same effect.

You'll see cars with bumper stickers that say Downtownie, Georgestownie, Rabbittownie, Hoylsetownie, etc. All are just neighbourhoods.

Loving those Van shots. I really like the look of the old modern skyline, with the Hotel Vancouver still appearing and not hidden like today.

I just like the Hotel Vancouver. Bitter montreal never had an equivalent, even though we should had one.

A few stills from CBC's coverage of a severe winter storm here in January, 1966.

I concur - my dad worked in that tower (Calgary Place) for years so I have fond memories of it.
The Calgary Tower would have been brand spanking new in 1968 as well. Calgary's population would have been what . . . 325,000 ?

I kind of miss the "all whiteness" of FCC in that Toronto pic. It contrasts so nice & sharply with the TD Centre.

I recently saw Helicopter Canada, a 1967 NFB film comprised of aerial footage from across the country...as the name might imply. Pretty interesting stuff. Available on Netflix too.

This music video is made from clips of it:

A few new ones via Vintage St. John's. Three eras of the same corner of Livingstone Street.

A commemorative poster celebrating the first public performance of Newfoundland's national anthem on January 21, 1902. It's younger than Canada's (1880 in French; 1908 in English).

(Governor was our term for Governor General)

Of note is that the Newfoundland tricolour is depicted. It has never been an official flag of Newfoundland. The official one at that time was still the Red Ensign (1674-1904):

From the paper the next day: “Miss Frances Daisy Foster rendered with exquisite feeling a new song entitled “Newfoundland.” It proved a pleasant surprise and the general appreciation of it was marked by the audience joining spontaneously in the chorus.”

A few new ones released by Memorial University's archives, almost all from 1904.

Cavendish Square.

Waterfront.

Queen's Road at Prescott Street.

The view from the top of those stairs today:

Prescott Street by Rabbittownie, on Flickr

Riverhead. This area is completely different today. The river is walled or filled in with silt/marshland. It's basically just a stream.

The "Chinese Laundry" (sorry if that's offensive, that's what it was called) area at the entrance to the Central Slum.

The ruins of the Benevolent Irish Society/St. Patrick's Hall following the fire of 1892.

Same building today:

St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador by Rabbittownie, on Flickr

The view from the Battery.

Anti-Catholic rally. (Kidding lol - Royal visit)

Something I didn't even know existed. The Fort William Railway Station in the east end of St. John's, just behind the Newfoundland Hotel. The rails even went out to the Battery.

Duckworth Street.

Water Street.

Military Road at Rawlin's Cross.

Same view today - complete the statue affectionately known locally as the texting girl. People even dispose of old phones in her hands.

Out of curiousity, do any other cities only paint lines on the road within a few metres of intersections?

Going through the old annual almanac that was produced here. Fascinating reading about what was going on before we had any for of representative government.

A couple of things from the 1828 edition.

The plans for our Government House (which would later become the home of our equivalent of Canada's Governor General, and is still home to our Lieutenant version):

And the leaders/titles at that time:

Another cute thing - in the same way many countries do today for the former Yugoslavia, many governments around the world only sent a single ambassador for Canada and Newfoundland:
