Integrated Mobility Plan

Just noticed this on Twitter. I think it's new, and it sounds like something the city's needed for a while:

The Integrated Mobility Plan (IMP) will create a vision for moving around the Halifax region and help to direct future investment in transportation demand management, transit, active transportation, and the roadway network to improve the links between residents and their communities.

Just an excuse to waste more money building bike lanes.

Or maybe.... maybe it identifies areas most appropriate for bike lanes by considering all transportation modes as part of an intermodal system... and maybe we can stop fighting about which streets should have bikes, which should be widened and where transit should go.

Probably goals too lofty for what I'm sure is a bureaucratic exercise in ultimately doing nothing.

It is just a plan and any value depends on what is ultimately implemented, but I think it is much better than the narrow project-specific studies that regional council has tended to work off of in the past. Because there is an accounting of regional demand and impact it's also easier to avoid going down the "what about Sheet Harbour?" rabbit hole.

The basic idea seems to be to pursue commuter rail and upgrade the bus network with priority corridors. Some thought is given to integration with pedestrian access, ferries, and bike routes. The focus is mostly on the urban core and suburban areas where transit can be viable.

Interesting that they've included Burnside-Woodside as a potential commuter rail route. I saw a proposal/study for that route maybe 10 years ago but haven't really heard mention of it since then.

Also the potential for commuter rail along the Bedford Highway as well as transit priority measures on the Bedford Highway itself could lead to some interesting scenarios in the future.

Finally, interesting that the "future ferry route" is now anticipated as being Downtown-Shannon Park, rather than Bedford, Purcells Cove, or Eastern Passage, as previously envisioned.
