The cranes are resting on the elevator banks and the stairwells which are located within the core, actually there will be two cores, side by side. The steel columns are not part of the core, rather the perimeter skeleton.

As to your question there will be an underground passage from the Transit Hub to the World Financial Center creating one of the largest malls in Manhattan.

While the mall is still in place I should add that from what I've heard it is the mall that will be taking the most of the cuts from the PA because of the Transit Hubs cost overruns.

So i found the "survivor's staircase" being set aside so they can dig for tower 2.

In terms of size or quality? It's a shame to hear that, but the transit is more important.

Street level across West street. The two infamous beams that broke street level are to the right of the 2nd crane.

Both. Its upsetting, but for me atleast its not a big deal. Groundzero is already unbearable with all the tourists. I can only imagine the mall with tourists taking pictures outside of the GAP and standing in the middle of the mall in everyones way as they pull out their map. I already think malls are hell, with dumb tourists all over the place, this will be one mall I will be sure to stay away from. As is I rarely go to Century 21 anymore. The good news is from what I hear all the above ground portions of the Transit Hub are safe.

This was never really going to be the same as the old WTC concourse anyway, with a lot of the retail now being at and above street level. The best thing about this concourse now is that it will connect to the Fulton St station, where people will have direct access all the way to the World Financial Center, in effect making the Fulton St stop a WTC stop.

This is great news! I also noticed in the pics the black shrouded building right next to 90 west street seems to be uncovered a little. Whats happening to it?

is the mall going to be bigger then the old one because ive not yet heard anything about the mall in wtc i bet it will be really nice and all modern and stuff just like the tower.
but i have been told that the lobby will look just like the old one. but more modern.

Freedom Tower Hits Street Level

by Eliot Brown

After well over a year of below-grade work, the Freedom Tower has reached the street level. Those in the Spitzer administration had often pointed to this milestone as a time at which the public would begin to understand that there was active work going on at Ground Zero.

Well from what I hear now there will be an undergound mall, but it will not be as big as the former one. The concourse however will be bigger being that it extends from Fulton Street, through the WTC and into the WFC. I'm sure that'll be lined with retail. The other retail is above ground and in some cases inside a few of the towers.

They way I look at it, it'll be the best of both worlds. You'll have the undergound mall and large concourse, as well as above grade retail.
